Nemanja Matic’s career has gained new momentum in Serie A, where he now shines while playing for Sassuolo. However, the Serbian player has not forgotten the challenging times he experienced at Manchester United and, in a revealing interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, he exposes the issues that have plagued the Red Devils in recent years.
Matic, who had a remarkable journey at Old Trafford, although it ended on a less positive note, shared some deep reflections about his former team. During the conversation, the 35-year-old midfielder was asked about the reasons that led Manchester United to face so many difficulties in recent times. His response was direct and incisive: “Firstly, the pressure. It was difficult for everyone to understand that United was neither the richest team in England nor the strongest. I remember being on the pitch and passing the ball back to change the play, and people would start grumbling. And if Old Trafford grumbles, young players can suffer from that.”
Matic did not hesitate to address one of the most controversial issues plaguing Manchester United: ownership management. The player was clear in stating that the club’s leadership was more focused on marketing strategies than on football needs. “I think the owners were not in tune with the mindset and expectations of the fans. They were too concerned with other things, like marketing. Even we, the players, spent two hours a week doing marketing.”
Despite his criticisms, Matic expressed support for the current manager of Manchester United, Michael Carrick. With an optimistic outlook, he stated: “Now, however, something has changed: Carrick was an excellent choice; they need to give him a few years to rebuild the team.” This statement reflects a hopeful perspective for the fans, who are yearning for better days.
With the experience gained throughout his career, Matic seems to have a clear vision of what is needed for Manchester United to regain its former glory. While he continues to shine in Italy, his words resonate at Old Trafford, where challenges still abound, but the hope for a new beginning may be on the horizon.
