Ch shocking! Former Chelsea and Brazilian international Oscar announces forced retirement due to serious heart problem

The career of one of the most talented midfielders of his generation has come to an abrupt and dramatic end. Oscar, the former Chelsea player and Brazilian national team member, revealed on Friday that he has been forced to retire from professional football after being diagnosed with a heart condition that poses a risk to his health.

The 34-year-old midfielder experienced a worrying episode last November during physical tests at the São Paulo training center, the Brazilian club where he was playing. After being hospitalized, he was diagnosed with a case of vasovagal syncope—fainting caused by a sudden drop in blood pressure and heart rate, something that, while common, can be fatal for high-level athletes.

With a contract valid for another two years with São Paulo, Oscar made the difficult decision to cancel the agreement and end his career. “I wanted to do so much more for São Paulo, I wanted to play more. I feel that I had the ability and age to continue, but unfortunately this happened,” the player confessed in an emotional social media post.

The midfielder, who has 48 international caps for the Brazilian national team, added: “Now I will retire and continue to support São Paulo, living my life as a fan. I end my career here, on a journey that has taken me around almost the entire world.” Oscar did not forget the fans: “I would like to thank everyone for their constant support, especially the São Paulo fans who have been with me since I returned and during this difficult moment.”

Oscar’s career is marked by achievements and undeniable talent. He transferred to Chelsea in July 2012, where he shone immediately, winning the Europa League in his first season and later the Premier League title and the League Cup in 2014-15. In January 2017, he moved to Chinese football to represent Shanghai Port, where he was a key player in three Chinese Super League titles. In 2025, he returned to São Paulo, the club that raised him, signing a three-year contract.

This unexpected announcement leaves a void in Brazilian and international football, reminding us of the fragility of athletes’ health even at the peak of their careers. Oscar bids farewell with his head held high and the respect of millions, closing a brilliant chapter marked by class, determination, and professionalism.

At 34 years old, and despite the premature farewell, Oscar leaves a legacy that goes far beyond trophies — a lesson in courage and love for the sport, which now compels him to turn the page and embrace his new life off the pitch.
