In an exciting clash that heightened the competitive spirit in Italian football, Raffaele Palladino, coach of Atalanta, expressed his satisfaction after a thrilling 2-2 draw against Lazio, which keeps the team in the running for the Coppa Italia final. “It’s wonderful to be in three competitions, but extremely tiring,” said Palladino, referring to the challenge his team faces as the sole Italian representative in the Champions League, while also fighting for a top-four spot in Serie A and competing in the Coppa Italia semi-finals.
The match, held at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, saw Atalanta display impressive resilience, coming back from behind twice to secure a draw that could be crucial in the second leg. Lazio started strong, with Fisayo Dele-Bashiru opening the scoring, but Mario Pasalic’s response was swift, bringing Atalanta back into the game. The intensity did not wane, and Yunus Musah, who has been gaining prominence in the team, also made his mark, immediately responding to a goal from Boulaye Dia.
Palladino did not hold back in praising his opponent, highlighting the quality of Maurizio Sarri’s team. “We had a good game against a strong opponent. It was balanced and fun to watch,” commented the coach, emphasizing that Atalanta had several opportunities, including a disallowed goal and a shot off the post, which only reinforced the need to be more incisive in attack. “After the break, we showed our determination by equalizing, a result we believe we deserved until the end,” he added.
The focus now shifts to the second leg, which will be played in Bergamo on April 21 or 22, where Atalanta hopes to count on the fervent support of their fans to secure a place in the final. “The tie is open, it’s 50-50 and we want to reach the final,” said Palladino, revealing renewed confidence in his team after this performance.
Additionally, Yunus Musah’s performance deserves recognition. The American midfielder, who initially struggled to establish himself in the team following his transfer from Milan, has shown remarkable progress, scoring in consecutive matches. “Musah is a player who didn’t have many opportunities at first, but with Ederson’s absence, he has shown his worth,” said the coach, emphasizing the importance of all players contributing to the team’s success.
Palladino also commented on Lazar Samardzic, praising his potential but pointing out that he needs to improve in decision-making and finishing. “He has what it takes; we need him to raise his level,” concluded the coach.
Atalanta, who came back from a 2-0 deficit in the first leg of the Champions League against Borussia Dortmund to win 4-1 in the second match, has proven that they never give up. Now, the challenge is to continue their winning streak across three competitions. The future looks promising for the team, but it is also demanding, and Palladino knows that each game will be a test of his team’s resilience and determination.
