The long-awaited 201st Klassieker between Feyenoord and Ajax ended in a 1-1 draw, frustrating PSV’s hopes of officially claiming their 27th title. The match, which promised excitement, turned out to be a tactical battle, where Jakub Moder equalized with a penalty after a stunning goal from Seun Steur. This result leaves PSV in suspense, waiting at least another two weeks to celebrate their achievement.
Feyenoord took to the field in second place, boasting a five-point lead over their arch-rivals Ajax, who appeared revitalized under the interim management of Óscar García, following a convincing 4-0 victory over Sparta Rotterdam the previous week. However, Robin van Persie’s team had a tough time and was forced to make changes to their lineup. With Mats Deijl suspended and Hwang In-beom injured, Jordan Lotomba and Tsuyoshi Watanabe stepped in, while Anel Ahmedhodzic took Thijs Kraaijeveld’s place in defense. Meanwhile, García brought Wout Weghorst back into the starting eleven, with Jorthy Mokio replacing the injured Youri Regeer.
The match started slowly, with Feyenoord creating the first major opportunity when Watanabe headed just wide of the goal, but Ajax’s defense, led by Mokio, managed to save the situation with a heroic header off the line. The first 30 minutes were marked by a defensive game, with neither Ajax nor Feyenoord able to convert their attempts into clear opportunities, as goalkeepers Maarten Paes and Timon Wellenreuther made only routine saves.
The second half started promisingly for Feyenoord, but it was Ajax that, in an unexpected play, managed to open the scoring. The young midfielder Seun Steur, just 18 years old, took advantage of a loose ball and fired it into the back of the net, scoring his first goal in the Eredivisie and putting Ajax ahead. However, Feyenoord’s pressure increased, yet they failed to register a single shot on target.
The turning point came when Kian Fitz-Jim, in an attempt to intercept a play, fouled Jordan Lotomba in the area, resulting in a penalty for the hosts in the 82nd minute. Jakub Moder did not hesitate and converted the penalty, leveling the game just minutes before the end.
In the final minutes, Feyenoord intensified their pressure on Ajax, but the situation became complicated with the injury to Anis Hadj Moussa, who, despite being incapacitated, could not be substituted due to Van Persie’s lack of options. Despite their attempts, the match ended in a resounding 1-1, keeping Feyenoord five points ahead of Ajax.
This result was a blow to PSV, who were hoping for a slip-up from Ajax to clinch the title with a victory over Telstar. With an 18-point lead, the title celebration is postponed, but the rivalry and tension in Dutch football continue to grow, promising more excitement in the upcoming matches.
