Adrien Rabiot did not hold back in his criticism of his French teammates following the humiliating 6-4 defeat to England in the third-place playoff at the World Cup. The French midfielder labeled the behavior of some players as “unacceptable” and promised to speak with the new AC Milan coach, Ruben Amorim, after the holidays.
The defeat, suffered on July 14, was marked by a disastrous first half for France, who saw the English surge to a 4-0 lead by halftime. Rabiot, speaking to the press, including Gazzetta dello Sport, made a strong outburst about his team's performance: “It was a shameful first half; I saw unacceptable behaviors. We stepped onto the pitch in a way I would call regrettable. I witnessed attitudes from certain players that I had never seen before.” The midfielder went on to lament that the team failed to seize the last opportunity to leave a good impression: “There was a lot of disappointment after the semi-final against Spain, but there was also work to finish, and we couldn’t be happy to end like this.”
Despite the poor initial display, Rabiot highlighted an improvement in the second half: “At halftime, we talked and said that we needed some pride. The second half was clearly much better because, in the first, certain behaviors were unacceptable. We would have liked to finish with a victory, also for Didier Deschamps and his entire coaching staff, but this defeat does not erase what he has achieved over the years.”
The French midfielder also revealed that he will take a holiday before reporting to the new Milan coach, Ruben Amorim, for his second season at the San Siro club. “I will start again at Milan, of course. After that, I will speak with the new coach. Before that, I preferred to focus on the World Cup and not get distracted by other issues. The holidays are well deserved. It has been truly difficult days mentally,” he stated.
Milan decided to part ways with Massimiliano Allegri after failing to qualify for the Champions League in 2025-26 and recruited Ruben Amorim, former Manchester United manager, to replace him. The connection between Rabiot and Allegri is strong, as the Italian was his coach at Juventus and at Milan itself, having been instrumental in the midfielder's signing a year ago. Allegri, meanwhile, signed a three-season contract with Napoli.
