Rafael Jódar enters the ATP top 10 on Monday and becomes the first player to achieve this in his debut season on the circuit. The 20-year-old Spanish tennis player secured the milestone after Taylor Fritz lost to Valentin Vacherot in the semi-finals of the Swiss Indoors Basel, by 7-6(5), 6-3.
The result comes two days after Jódar completed his campaign in Basel, where he lost to Vacherot in a closely contested match, with scores of 7-6(4), 2-6, 7-6(5). Vacherot eliminated Holger Rune and reached the semi-finals, which opened the door for Jódar, who had been just a step away from the top 10 for several months.
Fritz could have blocked the Spaniard’s path had he reached the final, but he was surpassed by Vacherot’s victory.
## From the Fourth Hundred to the Top 10 in Just One Season
Jódar’s rise has been one of the most remarkable narratives of the 2026 season. He started the year outside the top 150 and won his first ATP title in Marrakech, reached the final in Washington, and made significant progress at the Masters 1000 level.
He entered the top 100 in March and the top 50 the following month, climbing to 11th place in August.
Jódar had previously missed an opportunity to break into the top 10 after a strong performance in Montreal, but the results of the autumn have brought him back into contention for this achievement. He will become the 21st Spanish player to reach the ATP top 10, joining names like Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz, David Ferrer, and Juan Carlos Ferrero.
## The Duel with Vacherot in Basel
Jódar took Vacherot to a decisive tiebreak, despite losing the opening set. The Monegasque remained calm in crucial moments and won 7-5 in the final tiebreak. The defeat did not prevent Jódar from rising in the rankings, thanks to Vacherot’s subsequent victories.
## Next Challenge: Paris Masters
The Spaniard’s attention now turns to the Paris Masters, where he is set to face Alejandro Tabilo. This will be the fifth encounter between the two this season: Tabilo won their first duel in Indian Wells, but Jódar responded with three consecutive victories, including their most recent match in Basel.
Jódar is also in the race for a spot in the ATP Finals through the Race to Turin. With several established players pressuring the last qualifying spots, a strong performance in Paris could allow him to reach another milestone before the end of his debut season.
