In an exclusive interview with the “Futebol Arte” program on Sport TV, hosted by Luís Freitas Lobo, Leão was emphatic: “I need a new challenge. I have already won two trophies in Italy. The Italian championship is evolving, but for my football, my talent, a Premier League and a Spanish league would enhance my talent more.” The Portuguese international made it clear that the English championship is particularly appealing: “I really like the English championship. If the opportunity arises, I will be very happy. Playing in this type of championship also greatly values the player.”
The 2023/24 season did not go well for Rafael Leão. With just ten goals and three assists in 31 matches, the forward struggled with injuries that affected his performance. “It was a difficult season. We did not qualify for the Champions League. The way I was in pre-season, I felt I could make a difference. The way the team performed throughout the season and the work during the week did not give me the condition to make a difference,” he admitted. Leão also revealed that he played injured for four to five months, battling tendinitis caused by pubalgia, and was used in a position that is not his, which exacerbated his physical and mental fatigue: “At the end of the season, it becomes exhausting.”
