Real Madrid is fighting hard to protect its player, Vinicius Jr., following serious allegations of racism that emerged during the intense Champions League match against Benfica. The Spanish club presented a robust set of evidence to UEFA today, supporting its defense of the Brazilian star, who claimed he was subjected to racial slurs by Benfica forward Gianluca Prestianni.
Vinicius Jr. accused Prestianni of calling him a “monkey” shortly after scoring a spectacular goal that put Real Madrid ahead. This moment of brilliance was, however, overshadowed by the racism allegations, leading to an eight-minute interruption in the game as the referee sought to ascertain the facts. Prestianni’s response was one of complete denial, with the young player stating that Vinicius had misinterpreted his words.
In official statements, Real Madrid said: “Real Madrid CF announces that today it presented all available evidence to UEFA regarding the incidents that occurred last Tuesday, February 17, during the Champions League match our team played in Lisbon against SL Benfica. Our club actively collaborated with the investigation opened by UEFA following the unacceptable episodes of racism experienced during that match. We appreciate the unanimous support and affection that our player Vinicius Jr. received from all areas of the global football community. Real Madrid will continue to work, in collaboration with all institutions, to eradicate racism, violence, and hatred in sport and society.”
What really happened between Prestianni and Vinicius? The tense atmosphere at the Estádio da Luz was not limited to the action on the field. After the goal, Vinicius ran towards the referee, raising the flag over the racial insults. Prestianni, for his part, took to social media to defend himself, stating: “I want to clarify that at no point did I insult Vinícius Jr., who, unfortunately, misinterpreted something he thinks he heard. I have never been racist towards anyone and I regret the threats I received from Real Madrid players.” He also questioned the logic of the accusation: “If they say that I directed a racist insult at Vinícius Jr., then why did no one react? Accusing others of something serious is not correct, especially when it is not true.”
The statements made by José Mourinho, former coach of Real Madrid and current manager of Benfica, also did not go unnoticed. Mourinho suggested that Vinicius Jr. had disrespected the Benfica fans by celebrating excessively. “Yes. I believe so. It should have been the crazy moment of the game, an incredible goal. Unfortunately, [he was] not just happy to score that impressive goal. When you score a goal like that, you celebrate in a respectful way,” Mourinho said.
Benfica, for its part, defended Prestianni by releasing recordings that allegedly show that no Real Madrid player could have heard what Vinicius Jr. claimed. However, the footage shows forward Kylian Mbappé talking to Prestianni before he covers his mouth and seemingly makes a comment directed at Vinicius Jr.
This case is taking on dramatic contours and raises crucial questions about racism in football, a problem that continues to plague the sport. What will happen next in this saga? Real Madrid and Vinicius Jr. are determined to combat discrimination and injustice, while Benfica and Prestianni are trying to protect their reputation. The fight against racism in sport is a battleground that is still far from being resolved.
