Cristiano Ronaldo has announced the end of his international career, closing an era that seemed impossible to imagine without him. For 23 years, the former Manchester United player was the central figure of the Portugal team, with 146 goals in 234 appearances and international records that will probably last for generations.

With his departure, Portugal now face the challenge of reinventing themselves without the iconic number seven.

Ronaldo’s legacy with the national team

Portugal supporters fondly remember Ronaldo’s leadership, which guided the national team to their first European Championship in 2016 and to victory in the 2019 Nations League. The journey, which began with tears after defeat in the Euro 2004 final, culminated in memorable celebrations in Paris twelve years later, making him inseparable from the country’s footballing identity.

For Manchester United fans, Ronaldo’s international career was a constant reminder of the player who arrived at Old Trafford in 2003 and went on to win the Ballon d’Or.

First squad without Ronaldo

Portugal have announced their first squad since Ronaldo’s departure, including two Manchester United players: Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot. The team, coached by Jorge Jesus, face Denmark on 14 November and Wales on 17 November in the 2026/27 Nations League, having already secured qualification for the quarter-finals.

Bruno Fernandes arrives for these matches after playing a decisive role in United’s comeback against AS Roma. Despite seeing an early penalty saved, he converted the retake that started the turnaround, which was completed with a 3-2 win.

Diogo Dalot had a harder night: he was caught out of position for Roma’s goal and nearly made a serious error that could have cost a third goal for the visitors.

Now both players have the chance to help Portugal begin a new chapter without Ronaldo, a challenge that, although difficult, could be an opportunity for new faces to establish themselves in the national team. The contribution of Bruno Fernandes and Dalot will be important in shaping this new era.
