Paul Scholes, an icon of Manchester United, is at the center of a controversy that promises to stir up emotions among fans. The legend of the Red Devils, known for his frankness, vehemently denied that he was attacking former teammate Michael Carrick, the current manager of the team, regarding his performance at the helm of the club. His comments, which came after Carrick’s first defeat in charge against Newcastle, sparked considerable buzz among fans and analysts.

In a social media post that was quickly deleted, Scholes did not hold back and launched a sharp critique: “Michael definitely has something special… because United has been (expletive) in the last four games.” However, on the podcast “The Good, The Bad & The Football,” Scholes made sure to clarify his intentions. “I didn’t mean to offend Michael in any way,” he assured. The former player lavished praise on Carrick, describing him as “one of the nicest people you can meet in football” and emphasizing that he would be the last person he would want to offend.

After the backlash from his comments, Scholes revealed that he reached out to Carrick to clarify the situation: “I sent a message to Michael. I told him that I never intended to upset him.” According to him, Carrick stated that he was not offended, which brought relief to the former England international.

“I think people interpreted it differently from what I actually meant,” Scholes continued. He explained that his criticism was focused on the team’s performance and not on Carrick’s abilities as a coach. “What I was saying is that I don’t think they played well in the last four games, but he is still getting results,” he stated.

Scholes also referenced the legacy of Sir Alex Ferguson, the legendary manager who led the United to memorable victories: “We had the greatest manager in the world, and he always said that sometimes you need a bit of luck.” He emphasized that factors such as red cards and unforeseen situations during matches can influence outcomes, which was at the heart of his message.

With Manchester United going through a turbulent period, the pressure on Carrick is mounting. Scholes’ words, even if misinterpreted, reflect the concern of a legend who wants to see his club back on the path to victory. The question that lingers among fans is: can Carrick turn the tide and restore the greatness to United that the supporters so desperately desire?
