In a thrilling clash in Ligue 1, Olympique de Marseille saw their two-goal lead evaporate, resulting in a dramatic 2-2 draw against Strasbourg, who managed to secure a penalty in the final minutes, leading to an impressive turnaround in the match. With this result, Marseille remains winless in their last three matches, a concerning outcome that could hinder their title aspirations.
Following Roberto De Zerbi’s departure during the week, Jacques Abardonado took over as interim coach, but the match started disastrously for the hosts, who were dominated in the opening minutes. Strasbourg created the first major opportunity just four minutes in, when Martial Godo found himself unmarked at the far post, but Geronimo Rulli made a spectacular save, denying the goal with an impressive deflection.
That save became a turning point for Marseille, who managed to stabilize and take the lead in the 14th minute. Amine Gouiri, in a brilliant play, delivered a precise pass, allowing Mason Greenwood, with a deft touch, to surpass Mike Penders and put the hosts ahead. Forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang nearly doubled the advantage, but Penders made two phenomenal saves in quick succession, denying the Gabonese striker’s efforts.
However, as the first half of the game progressed, Strasbourg became increasingly ineffective, until just before the break, Joaquin Panichelli nearly equalized when his shot hit the top of the net. After the interval, the situation worsened for Strasbourg, as Penders made an error in dealing with a back pass, and Gouiri seized the opportunity, creating space and finishing accurately into the bottom of the crossbar, putting Marseille in a comfortable position.
With less than 20 minutes remaining, it seemed that victory was guaranteed for Marseille, but Strasbourg surprised everyone by scoring an unexpected goal in the 74th minute. A deflected shot from Sebastian Nanasi left Rulli with no chance to save, making the score 2-1. What appeared to be a calm finish for Marseille quickly turned into a nightmare when, in stoppage time, Emerson Palmieri committed a clumsy foul on Gessime Yassine, resulting in a penalty.
Tension filled the stadium as Panichelli prepared to take the penalty. Despite a long and agonizing wait, he managed to focus, and even with Rulli getting a touch on the ball, the shot had enough power to find the net. The equalizer at 2-2 was a devastating blow for Marseille, who now find themselves 11 points behind leaders Paris Saint-Germain and just two points ahead of Lyon, who are in third place.
For Strasbourg, the draw halts a streak of two consecutive losses, keeping alive the hope of reaching the much-desired top 6 of the table. Although they have not won in their last three matches, the result brings a breath of relief for Gary O’Neil and his players, who are now just two points away from the qualification zone for European competitions.
The match not only highlights the highs and lows of football but also raises questions about Marseille’s continued fight for the title, while Strasbourg finds new motivation to push forward in the competition.
