Thomas Tuchel reveals secret about England’s selection for the World Cup.

A little over five months before the World Cup in North America, the England national team coach, Thomas Tuchel, made it clear that his selection of players will not be based solely on raw talent. In a strong statement, Tuchel emphasized the importance of “social skills” and personality, crucial elements in the quest for glory this summer. The team, arriving at the tournament as the current runners-up in Europe, will play their first match in Group L against Croatia in Dallas, and the decisions the coach has to make are of utmost importance.

With only two friendlies scheduled for March before announcing the final squad, Tuchel, who has already demonstrated his competence by guiding the team through the qualifying phase, reaffirms his goal of forming a “brotherhood” capable of competing with the best teams in the world. He acknowledges the significant progress made since he took over as coach a year ago, but now faces the challenge of selecting a squad that can achieve the long-desired second star on the national emblem.

Reflecting on past tournaments, Tuchel highlighted the intangible qualities that differentiate victorious teams. “When I talk to players who have participated in World Cups, I’ve always noticed that the bond between them made the difference. When communication is right, and players feel they are in the right group, that they know their roles and what is expected of them, success is more likely,” he stated.

He contrasted this with the less successful campaigns, where a lack of energy and enthusiasm led to a premature desire to go home. “When players start thinking about going home after the round of 16, it’s a sign that the energy wasn’t right and they couldn’t progress,” Tuchel added, emphasizing the need for a well-chosen squad.

The coach also made it clear that his focus goes beyond the technical ability of the players. “It is essential that we do not select solely based on talent, but rather on what we need from each player. What are their social skills? Are they a good teammate? Are they willing to play a supporting role if necessary? That is our priority,” said Tuchel, whose remarks were filmed last month but only released now.

Meanwhile, the England squad is preparing for the tournament with a training camp in Florida, where they will play two friendly matches. In the group stage of the World Cup, England will face Croatia, Ghana, and Panama. With pressure high and the nation’s expectations growing, every decision made by Tuchel will be crucial for the team’s fate. The quest for a place in the pantheon of world football has never been more intense, and Tuchel’s message is clear: the true strength of a team lies in unity and mutual understanding, not just in individual skills.
