Micky van de Ven, the defender for Tottenham Hotspur, did not hide his outrage when discussing his team’s desperate fight against relegation, emphasizing the urgency for five players who need to elevate their performance to avoid dropping to the Championship. The team’s situation is alarming, especially after the humiliating 4-1 home defeat to Arsenal in the 199th North London derby, marking their eighth loss at home this season. With only two wins in 14 home games, Tottenham ranks among the worst, surpassed only by Burnley and Wolves in the standings.

Pressure is mounting as West Ham managed to draw, narrowing the gap between the Spurs and the bottom three to just four points. The outlook is grim, with the possibility of a first relegation in the Premier League era and the first in 49 years, since 1977. Van de Ven, one of the team’s leaders, did not hesitate to describe the situation as “unacceptable” and urged his teammates to show grit and determination.

Before the match, the player told Sky Sports: “If you are a club like Tottenham Hotspur, which has quality infrastructure, it is unacceptable to be in this position in the table. The results need to be much, much better.” Acknowledging the frustration of the fans, Van de Ven emphasized that the team is working hard to turn the situation around, stating that the “atmosphere” in the locker room and the meetings after defeats are difficult to endure.

Identifying himself as one of five players who must take responsibility, he commented: “Of course, we still have quality players. We have a really talented squad, but we also miss key players. It is crucial for those who are available to step up.” Van de Ven mentioned the need for experienced players like Guglielmo Vic, João Palhinha, and Dominic Solanke to lead the group in tough times.

Igor Tudor, the new coach, also offered a blunt assessment of the situation, admitting that the team is “full of problems.” Since taking over just nine days ago, the scenario he witnessed in his debut was a real shock. Although Tottenham showed competitiveness in the first half, they were completely dominated by the league leaders in the second.

In statements to BBC Radio Five Live, Tudor commented: “The start was difficult against a team that is at a different level in terms of fitness. They were much better and deserved the victory.” With reality setting in, he acknowledged the need for intense and continuous effort: “What I saw on Tuesday showed that we need to work hard. At the moment, the team is full of problems. The key is to train day after day and be humble. We need to be more aggressive and compact.”

Pressure is mounting and urgency is palpable. Tottenham is at a crossroads, and every player, especially the more experienced ones, must step up to avoid a fate that many thought was only in the realm of fiction. The future of the club and the integrity of its history in the Premier League are at stake.
