Victor Montagliani poised to challenge Gianni Infantino with UEFA backing

CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani Emerges as Leading Contender to Oust FIFA Chief Gianni Infantino

Victor Montagliani, the current president of CONCACAF, is reportedly positioning himself to challenge Gianni Infantino for the FIFA presidency amid growing turmoil surrounding the embattled incumbent. This development follows UEFA’s decisive backing of CONCACAF and the AFC in rejecting Infantino’s controversial proposal to introduce private investment into the World Cup, a move widely condemned by global football federations.

UEFA hailed the recent withdrawal of Infantino’s disputed World Cup plans as a “victory for the whole game,” underscoring the mounting opposition to the FIFA president’s agenda. Infantino’s reputation has suffered significant damage due to these plans, fueling speculation that he may soon face a vote of no confidence and possibly step down.

Journalist Ben Jacobs has disclosed that Montagliani is likely to receive strong support from UEFA should he decide to run for FIFA’s top job. According to sources, the Canadian could command up to 96 votes from the combined backing of UEFA and CONCACAF, signaling a potent alliance against Infantino. UEFA is also reportedly seeking a comprehensive withdrawal of any written support for Infantino, intensifying the pressure on the current president.

Meanwhile, rumors circulated about Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi entering the FIFA race, but a spokesperson categorically dismissed these claims, stating he has “absolutely no ambition, no intention and no interest” in pursuing the presidency.

Even if Infantino survives an imminent no-confidence vote, he will still face the daunting task of securing re-election for a fourth term at the FIFA Congress scheduled for March. Montagliani’s potential candidacy, backed by powerful federations, could decisively reshape the leadership battle within world football’s governing body.
