In an incident that cast a shadow over the festive atmosphere at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, Real Madrid announced the launch of an investigation after a supporter allegedly performed a Nazi salute prior to the Champions League clash against Benfica. The incident occurred before the kickoff when, during a live broadcast, cameras focused on a fan who appeared to make the fascist gesture, a scene that quickly sparked outrage on social media and within the sporting community.

The club, which boasts one of the largest fan bases in the world, did not hesitate to take action. Security identified the supporter almost immediately and proceeded to expel him from the venue. Real Madrid, which ultimately defeated Benfica 2-1, thus securing qualification for the knockout stage of the competition with an aggregate score of 3-1, issued a firm statement: “Real Madrid condemns such gestures and expressions that incite violence and hatred in sports and society.” Furthermore, the club requested its disciplinary committee to “initiate immediate expulsion proceedings” against the supporter in question.

The incident is particularly significant in the context of a growing discussion about racism and discrimination in sports. This comes at a time when Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr had already reported being the target of racial abuse from Benfica player Gianluca Prestianni during the first leg match in Lisbon. Vinicius, who scored the only goal in that match, alerted the referee about the situation, leading to a 10-minute interruption as he and his teammates left the field in protest. Subsequently, Prestianni received a provisional one-match suspension, missing the second leg after UEFA rejected Benfica’s appeal.

Vinicius’s stance was widely supported by Real Madrid fans, who displayed a banner with the message “no to racism” in Spanish before the start of the game. His teammate, Aurelien Tchouameni, also spoke out, stating that the victory was “for everyone who opposes racism,” emphasizing the importance of solidarity and the fight against any form of discrimination in sports.

With this scandal putting Real Madrid in the spotlight, the club’s response and the mobilization of its fan community could be vital in the fight against racism and the promotion of a more inclusive environment in football. The situation not only reveals the challenges that the sport faces but also the determination of institutions and players to eradicate behaviors that have no place in a modern and civilized world.
