An alarming incident in the world of football is stirring the waters of the sports community and drawing attention to the issue of racial violence. The Portuguese government has officially announced the opening of an investigation into allegations of racial abuse directed at Vinicius Jr, a player for Real Madrid, during the recent UEFA Champions League clash against Benfica. This decision underscores the seriousness of the situation and the urgent need for action.

In its statement, the Authority for the Prevention and Combat of Violence in Sport (APCVD) confirmed that procedures have already been initiated to ascertain the facts. “The APCVD has begun administrative infringement processes to investigate the events,” read a statement made public on Wednesday. This move by the Portuguese government is a clear sign that racial abuse will not be tolerated and that the authorities are taking the matter seriously.

The statements made by Gianluca Prestianni, which have become the center of controversy, represent the 20th case of racial abuse allegations that Vinicius Jr has faced during his eight years as a player for Real Madrid. This exorbitant number reveals a dark reality that needs to be addressed. Change is not only necessary but urgent if we are to protect Vinicius and other players who face unacceptable abuse week after week.

The question now is how to hold Prestianni accountable, given that his action of covering his mouth complicates the evidence of what was actually said. Vinicius Jr, in an immediate reaction, made a strong statement on social media: “Racists are, above all, cowards. They need to cover their mouths to show how weak they are.” This act of diversion may not be a viable option for future individuals involved in similar situations.

The issue of accountability is not only a concern for clubs but also for the governing bodies of football. Mikael Silvestre, former defender of Manchester United and a member of FIFA’s players’ panel, expressed his outrage and the need for changes to the rules of the game. “Our WhatsApp group was buzzing on Tuesday night, and we are trying to find ways to sanction players who speak while covering their mouths,” Silvestre stated. He emphasized that conversations during the game, especially when it comes to hostility, must be taken seriously.

Silvestre also criticized the lack of communication during the incident. Referee François Letexier indicated that the protocol in response to racial abuse had been activated, but he stated that there should have been a clear announcement in the stadium to inform spectators. “We need to make everyone aware—including fans in the stadium—and the referee should be able to communicate clearly what is happening,” he lamented.

As the investigation by UEFA continues, Real Madrid, in a show of support for Vinicius Jr, has revealed that it has already sent all available evidence to the organization. The club expressed in a firm statement its active collaboration in the investigation: “Our club has actively collaborated with the investigation initiated by UEFA following the unacceptable incidents of racism experienced during that match. Real Madrid appreciates the unanimous support, solidarity, and affection that our player Vinicius Jr has received from all areas of the global football community.”

Meanwhile, the solidarity surrounding Vinicius Jr is not universal. Benfica and other sectors have shown themselves to be less favorable, highlighting the existing division. The issue of racism in football is an open wound that cannot be ignored, and the fight against it requires a robust and cohesive response from all parties involved. The pressure for significant changes to be implemented in European football is increasing, and the time to act is now.
