Tension is running high within Real Madrid, and two of its biggest stars, Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappé, are clearly opposing the possibility of José Mourinho taking over as head coach. According to the latest information, the duo does not view positively the idea of seeing the Portuguese manager at the helm of the club, especially after a series of controversial events that marked Real Madrid’s recent victory over Benfica in the first leg of the Champions League playoff.

That night, Vinicius Jr was the hero of the match, scoring the only goal of the game in the 51st minute. The Brazilian, known for his skill and charisma, celebrated the goal exuberantly, dancing in front of the corner flag, which incited the ire of Benfica fans. The situation escalated when the Portuguese team’s forward, Gianluca Prestianni, allegedly insulted Vini Jr with a racist slur, calling him a “monkey.” This incident led to the activation of the racism protocol, but referee Francois Letexier could do little, as Prestianni covered his mouth with his shirt.

After the match, Mourinho, who has previously managed clubs such as Chelsea, Tottenham, and Manchester United, decided to defend his club by criticizing Vinicius Jr.’s celebration. In controversial statements, he said: “It should have been the craziest moment of the game, an incredible goal. These talents can do beautiful things, but unfortunately, they are not satisfied just with scoring an extraordinary goal. When you score a goal like that, you should celebrate respectfully.”

Mourinho did not hesitate to insinuate that Vinicius Jr. played a part in provoking the crowd, stating: “I believe so [that Vinicius Jr. incited the crowd]. After the words exchanged, Gianluca Prestianni and Vinicius, I want to be independent. I saw two completely different things. I don’t want to comment on that. I told him exactly that, that when you score a goal like that, you should just celebrate and move on.” The coach also referenced the legacy of Eusebio, an iconic figure at the club, to emphasize that Real Madrid has no association with racism.

Mourinho’s comments were not well received among fans and players, especially at a time when football is facing an urgent battle against racism. The rejection of Mourinho as a future coach of Real Madrid by Vinicius and Mbappé may indicate a need for a healthier and more inclusive environment within the club.

As the situation unfolds, pressure on the Real Madrid management is mounting. Fans and players are demanding a leader who not only brings success but also fosters a culture of respect and equality both on and off the pitch. The future of the club may hinge on the management’s ability to listen to the voices of its key talents and, perhaps, prevent the ghost of Mourinho from haunting the Bernabéu.
