Liverpool face a real test in Paris, but PSG star insists: “Liverpool are Liverpool”

Tomorrow, Paris Saint-Germain will host Liverpool at the Parc des Princes for the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals, in a clash that promises to be intense and unpredictable. Despite a lackluster season for the Reds and recent humiliations, PSG midfielder Vitinha rejects the notion that the French side are favorites and warns of the power of the English team.

Liverpool has experienced turbulent moments this season, culminating in a humiliating 4-0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup, where the Merseyside team “gave up” after halftime, as admitted by captain Virgil van Dijk. This defeat has increased the pressure on coach Arne Slot, whose future at the club is uncertain, with bookmakers offering odds of 4/1 for a Liverpool victory in Paris.

However, Vitinha, the Portuguese international and key figure for PSG, rejects the idea that his club is the favorite: “That means nothing [to be the favorite]. We know how football is, there are no favorites in this type of game. Liverpool are Liverpool. They remain a great team. On a Champions League night, anything can change. Tomorrow, we will be 100% and very focused. It will be a very difficult game.”

Recalling last season’s clash between these two giants of Europe, Vitinha emphasizes the unpredictability of the matchup: “There were two exceptional, incredible games. The first left some frustration; Alisson was the man of the match, and I don’t remember a chance for Liverpool other than the goal. That’s what we want again tomorrow. Some think it will be easy, but in the span of a week, many things change in football, let alone in an entire year. We will be ready, but it will be different.”

Luis Enrique, PSG’s coach and former manager of Spain and Barcelona, shares the same view: “It’s not important to know who is the favorite. In these games, there are no favorites. Last year, everyone said Liverpool were the favorites, and in the end, it was us who advanced.” The Spanish coach hopes to replicate last season’s high-level performance but with a different outcome: “It was a very high-level display, and it’s incredible that we lost that game. I would like to have that level tomorrow, but not the same result. We want to win, to take advantage of Parc des Princes, the atmosphere, and the support of the fans.”

PSG, which will be without forward Bradley Barcola, who is still doubtful due to physical issues, and midfielder Fabian Ruiz, knows it will face a Liverpool eager to turn around its negative streak, but which remains one of the greatest forces in European football.

This clash promises to be a titanic battle where experience, quality, and the will to win will be at stake. However, given the current scenario, who will leave Paris with the advantage in the race for the Champions League final? Tomorrow, all the answers will start to unfold on the pitch.
