Nottingham Forest manager Vítor Pereira did not hide his relief after his team secured their place in the next round of the Europa League, despite a harrowing defeat in the second leg of the playoff against Fenerbahçe. The match, held on Thursday night, ended with a 2-1 victory for the Turks, but the English side’s overall win of 4-2 ensured them a spot in the round of 16.

After the final whistle, Pereira spoke candidly about the pressure the competition places on teams and their tactical decisions. “We know that matches in the Europa League, especially at this stage, are not easy,” he began, referring to the intensity and competitiveness that characterize this phase of the tournament. The Portuguese coach decided to implement some changes to the team, a risky strategy aimed at regaining energy for the players: “I decided to make some changes to try to recover energy. But if you change too much, there are risks.”

The match did not start well for Nottingham Forest, who saw Fenerbahçe open the scoring, which, according to Pereira, had a negative impact on his team’s morale. “When they scored the first goal, we lost a bit of our confidence. After the penalty at the start of the second half, we started to play at our level, maintaining possession and creating opportunities with speed,” he explained.

The coach emphasized the goal of restoring confidence among the players, even when the situation became complicated. “In my mind, I wanted to give confidence to everyone… but we were not in a good situation. It was my decision, but even when we were losing 2-0, we started to play. We had two clear opportunities where we were one-on-one with the goalkeeper.”

Nottingham Forest, under the leadership of Vítor Pereira, proved once again that resilience and adaptability are key in high-pressure competitions like the Europa League. With a place in the round of 16 now secured, it remains to be seen how the team will approach the challenges ahead. Fans will certainly hope that Pereira continues to implement his strategic vision, leading Nottingham Forest to new achievements in this prestigious European competition.
