Vítor Pereira criticizes VAR and says that one can no longer celebrate a goal.

Vítor Pereira, the manager of Nottingham Forest, did not hide his frustration after the goalless draw against Fulham, managed by Marco Silva, in the 30th round of the Premier League. The match, which left his team without the much-needed victory, was marked by a controversial VAR decision that stirred emotions at the City Ground.

The stage was set for celebration when, in the 63rd minute, N’Doye, who had come on as a substitute at halftime, seemed to have secured the win with a goal that sent the crowd into a frenzy. However, the joy was short-lived. After a lengthy video review, VAR had the final say and disallowed the goal, claiming that the tip of the player’s heel was in an offside position. A millimetric decision that, according to Pereira, exemplifies the dilemma of modern football: “It’s hard to understand. Against Liverpool, the decision was to validate the goal. Today it was exactly the opposite. This is modern football. You can no longer celebrate a goal because a minute later…”

The manager’s words resonate with the frustration of many football lovers who see technology as a double-edged sword. “I celebrated the goal because I saw nothing wrong. In the end, I was told it was offside, I don’t know, by a toenail. I don’t understand, but that’s modern football,” Pereira lamented, reflecting on the irony of the moment.

Despite the disappointment with the result, Nottingham Forest managed to climb out of the relegation zone, surpassing West Ham United in the standings. The Portuguese coach, however, chose to highlight the positive side of his team’s performance: “What I take from this game is the spirit of the team. They tried everything to win. The players who came off the bench tried to help us win. This is the spirit we need until the end of the season,” he said, emphasizing the need to maintain a competitive mentality.

The battle for survival in the Premier League continues, and Vítor Pereira seems determined to galvanize his team for the challenges ahead. “We need to compete and maintain this mentality. They are trying. Keeping a clean sheet was important,” he concluded, reaffirming the hope and determination that characterize his work at Nottingham Forest.

The controversy surrounding VAR and its influence on modern football are topics that will certainly continue to be debated. With each decision, emotions run high as part of the spectacle, but the question remains: how far are we willing to sacrifice the joy of football for technological accuracy?
