The victory of Anthony Kim at the LIV Golf Adelaide has ignited the flame of hope for his return to major championships, including the highly coveted participation in the Masters at Augusta in 2026. The path ahead is filled with challenges, but far from impossible. To secure his presence in the iconic tournament, Kim urgently needs to rise to the top 50 of the Official World Golf Ranking by April 6. Without a special invitation from Augusta National, this is the only door that opens for him.
The triumph in Adelaide had a significant impact on his ranking, propelling him from a modest 847th place to 203rd, after 16 years without a professional win. However, the task remains monumental, as Kim has over 150 positions to recover in a short period of time. A recent change in the rules has brought new hope: now, LIV Golf events award points for the world ranking, meaning solid performances can catapult players up the list. With only a few LIV tournaments remaining before the Masters deadline, Kim will likely need either a new victory or several high finishes to get closer to his goal.
Augusta represents much more than just a competition for Kim; his best finish at the Masters was a remarkable third place in 2010, and the last time he participated was in 2011. While the possibility still exists on paper, the reality is that climbing up the rankings will be a dizzying challenge unless Augusta National decides to extend a special invitation.
“Winning in Adelaide opened the door a bit,” Kim said, reflecting on his journey. “What happens next will depend on my performance in the coming weeks.”
But what about his chances in the other majors of 2026? Even though Augusta seems like a distant goal, Kim still has several viable routes to participate in the remaining tournaments this year. The PGA Championship, for example, could be the most accessible in terms of ranking. Unlike the Masters, the invitation process is more flexible, allowing players within the top 100 of the World Ranking to be invited, giving Kim a greater margin and more time to climb by the early April deadline.
When it comes to the U.S. Open, the options are varied. A ranking within the top 60 by mid-May would guarantee entry, but there is also a specific exemption for LIV in 2026. The highest-ranked LIV player who does not already have an invitation and is among the top three by May 18 will earn a spot at Shinnecock Hills. Following his victory in Adelaide, Kim currently occupies the second position in the rankings, placing him well in the race for that spot.
The Open Championship, which will take place at Royal Birkdale, offers a similar scenario. A position among the top 50 in the world rankings by the end of May would guarantee entry, but there is also an exemption dedicated to LIV. The highest-ranked player not exempt from the individual LIV rankings after the Louisiana event in 2026 will secure a spot. Kim’s current position near the top of the rankings puts him in a good position, as long as he maintains his competitive form until the end of June.
With the determination of a true champion and renewed motivation following his victory, Anthony Kim is in a fierce battle to claim his place among the elite of world golf, and the next stage of his journey begins now.
