In Orlando, Chris Gotterup is experiencing a pivotal moment in his career. During the pro-am of the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the player not only impressed with his golfing skills but also stood out by displaying a golden ball marker, a souvenir from his recent visit to Augusta National Golf Club, home of the Masters. “I bought a bunch of them that are in my bag,” Gotterup revealed, shedding light on his connection to the prestige of golf.

This seemingly simple gesture is a symbol of his growth and rise in the world of professional golf. With an evolving strategic intellect and an expanding skill set, Gotterup, who has already secured four victories in less than three seasons on the PGA Tour, is building a legacy that promises to be remarkable. In the past eight months, he has claimed three titles and is currently well-positioned to win another, tied for seventh place at Bay Hill, just six strokes behind leader Daniel Berger.

Gotterup has already demonstrated impressive courage on big stages. In his fourth major tournament, he finished in third place at the Championship, a remarkable achievement, especially after having defeated world number two, Rory McIlroy, the previous week. Now, on the brink of one of the most important tournaments of the season, the Players Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach, Gotterup reflects on his identity as a golfer and the journey that has led him to become one of the favorites, currently ranked sixth in the world.

His meteoric rise is no coincidence. At just 26 years old, Gotterup boasts an impressive college resume and is considered one of the most promising talents in golf. “He is not a late bloomer,” observes Jason Birnbaum, his longtime coach, who compares his skills to golf icons like Nicklaus and Hogan. Bhrett McCabe, a sports psychologist who works with Gotterup, reinforces this idea, stating that he started from a high base of talent and has matured in his approach to the game.

“We are always improving based on our strengths, and Chris is always interested in knowing how he can evolve,” explains McCabe. And Gotterup’s strength is evident; the way he strikes the ball off the tee creates an impact that resonates, and in terms of distance, he ranks an impressive fifth on tour with an average of 322.2 yards. “He has a build similar to Jack Nicklaus, but the setup of Lee Trevino,” highlights Birnbaum, who has been following Gotterup since he was 13 years old.

Chris Gotterup is not just a talented player; he is a competitor who has evolved from a solid foundation in golf. Growing up in Little Silver, New Jersey, and without competing in AJGA events, his rise went unnoticed until his transfer to the University of Oklahoma, where he captured attention and awards such as the Jack Nicklaus and Fred Haskins as the top collegiate players. With an average of 69.83, one of the best in the program’s history, he quickly demonstrated that he was ready for the professional tour.

After some initial struggles, where he missed the cut in seven of his first 13 tournaments, Gotterup made a significant change by working with McCabe and hiring Brady Stockton as his caddie. Since then, his performance has drastically improved, culminating in impressive victories at the Genesis and the Sony Open, where he started and finished with rounds of 63 and 64, respectively.

His ability to stay focused under pressure is remarkable. At the WM Phoenix Open, he birdied five of his last six holes to force a playoff, where he ultimately secured the victory. “He really focuses under pressure,” Stockton praises. Now, with experience and a strong team by his side, Gotterup is looking forward to his next big test at the Players Championship, where he seeks redemption after failing to make the cut the previous year. “I’m in a different place now,” he states, confident in his abilities and ready for whatever challenges lie ahead.

Looking to the future, Gotterup is aware of the expectations but keeps his feet on the ground. “I appreciate all the opportunities and support I receive from my team,” he said modestly. “I’m excited for the year and what’s to come.” Chris Gotterup is, effectively, an ordinary individual who stands out in golf, and his future prospects appear promising. His mastery on the golf course is just a sign of what is to come.
