Lydia Ko surprised everyone by appearing at the Amundi Evian Championship with her husband, Jun Chung, as her caddie — and she humorously assured that she wouldn't be paying him for the service. “It’s like: what’s yours is mine, and what’s mine is mine,” joked Ko in a post by the LPGA, alongside her husband. The light and relaxed atmosphere was further highlighted when Chung recalled that he was using vacation days to accompany her, to which Ko responded pointedly: “You should feel honored to be the caddie of a Hall of Famer.”
The New Zealand golfer, a legend of the sport, returns to the stage where she won her first major in 2015, becoming the youngest ever winner of a major at just 18 years, 6 months, and 2 days. Since then, she has added three titles in this category to her resume, with seven top-10 finishes in twelve appearances at the Evian. She arrives at this tournament following a 15th place finish at the KPMG Women’s PGA at Hazeltine two weeks ago. This Thursday, Ko will start the tournament at 11:36 local time (6:36 ET), accompanied by Charley Hull and Jeeno Thitikul.
The relationship between Ko and Chung is characterized by a strong bond both on and off the course. Her husband, described as “golf-obsessed,” began playing the sport during the Covid-19 pandemic and, when he met Ko, had to Google her to understand who she was. During their honeymoon, the couple played eight rounds together, anticipating a family life where golf will be a constant presence. Ko does not hide her desire to share this passion with their future children.
This role reversal is not unprecedented: a few years ago, Ko served as a caddie for her husband when he participated in the U.S. Am Tour in Monterey, California. In 2023, in statements to Golfweek, Ko recalled the moment: “When he comes to my tournaments, he is always trying to help me. But it was one of the rare times I could do something for him. I was even more excited. I told him he had to play both days. He even pushed the trolley during one round to help me, and I said to him: ‘You’re stealing my job now. I’m your caddie.’”
The irreverent atmosphere promises to infect this Evian Championship, with Ko demonstrating that success can go hand in hand with good humor. It remains to be seen whether this family partnership on the course will translate into another standout result for the New Zealand champion.
