Ernie Els is experiencing a moment of great excitement as he kicks off the Portugal Invitational, the first event of the PGA Tour Champions in the country. The new Els Club Vilamoura, a result of a thorough renovation of one of Arnold Palmer’s courses, is hosting this historic tournament. The redesign of the course involved the revitalization of one of the nine holes, while the other was completely reimagined, creating an innovative layout. “It was an old Arnold Palmer golf course, one of my heroes. That put a lot of pressure on us because we don’t want to ruin a great Arnold Palmer course,” said Els, who has a personal connection to the region, having spent holidays there with his family. For him, Portugal is a special place, as his family lived in England and found the Algarve to be the perfect balance between work and leisure.
The Portugal Invitational is not only a milestone in Els’s career but also a new era for golf in Portugal. The event is part of a series of competitions in Europe, which includes the Staysure Senior PGA Championship in Scotland, and attracts 78 of the best players on the senior circuit. Cink and Zach Johnson, the season’s dominant figures, are just a few of the standout names, along with other prestigious champions such as Retief Goosen and Colin Montgomerie.
During the opening press conference, André Gomes, president of the Algarve Tourism Board, emphasized the importance of this event for promoting the region. “This is the return of the Algarve to international golf events. We have world-class courses, excellent hotels, and sunny weather all year round,” said Gomes. He highlighted that this tournament not only promotes golf but also the hospitality of the region, attracting new audiences and strategic markets.
