Rory McIlroy dazzles in title defense at the Masters with a stunning display! The Northern Irish golfer kicked off the 2026 Augusta tournament with an impressive opening round of 5 under par, totaling 67 strokes – his best first-round score at the Masters since 2011. This performance not only reignites fans’ hopes but also makes it clear that McIlroy is more determined than ever to replicate the triumph he achieved last year.

At the historic Augusta National Golf Club, where the love for the game has turned into a true passion, McIlroy recorded six birdies and just one bogey, demonstrating a perfect blend of aggression and patience. “I felt I played better than I expected. A fair score would perhaps be 2 under par, but I managed to surpass that and avoid major mistakes. It was a lesson I’ve learned over the years here,” confessed the 36-year-old champion, who is competing in his 18th edition of the Masters.

The legendary Jack Nicklaus did not hold back his praise and issued a warning: “Rory has the talent to play well here and has already lifted the weight off his shoulders. I believe he has an excellent chance of repeating the title.” McIlroy himself acknowledges the psychological advantage of having already won the coveted Green Jacket. “Winning the Masters makes it easier to win a second time. Now, I can make my shots without fear, knowing I can relax and enjoy at the end of the day.”

Despite a somewhat uneven start, with only 36% of fairways hit—a figure below his average—McIlroy made up for it by finding 13 of the 18 greens and demonstrating an incredible ability to recover over the last 11 holes, where he totaled 5 under par. “Normally, a start like this could leave me hesitant, but I maintained my confidence and kept attacking,” he explained.

McIlroy finished the day tied for the lead with Sam Burns, positioning himself to become the sixth player in Masters history to lead or share the lead in the first round after winning the tournament the previous year. The last time this happened was in 2016, with Jordan Spieth, who ultimately finished in second place. However, only Jack Nicklaus has managed to repeat the title, in 1966.

Now, with the pressure lifted and experience gained, Rory McIlroy is ready to turn this promise into reality. His ambition is clear: not only to defend his title but to once again etch his name in the history of world golf. Stay tuned, because the show in Augusta has only just begun and McIlroy is the star who will ignite this edition of the Masters!
