Rory McIlroy labelled ‘drama queen’ by Lee Westwood

Rory McIlroy finds himself at the centre of a media storm as he leads the 2026 Masters, but it is not only his performance at Augusta that is making headlines. New revelations about his personal life, especially the tumultuous relationship with Erica Stoll, are once again putting the world number one in the spotlight, with accusations and controversies stirring the sporting universe.

Lee Westwood, a long-standing colleague and rival of McIlroy, did not hold back with harsh criticism of the Northern Irish golfer, calling him a “drama queen” in a passage from Alan Shipnuck’s book, ‘Rory: The Heartache and Triumph of Golf’s Most Human Superstar’. This phrase may seem light, but it reveals a deep and longstanding tension between the two, exacerbated by the controversy surrounding LIV Golf.

The rivalry between McIlroy and Westwood dates back to the 2010s, with intense battles for the top of the world rankings and memorable confrontations, such as in the semi-finals of the WGC-Accenture Match Play. However, the real split occurred when several Ryder Cup players, including Westwood, Sergio García, Graeme McDowell and Ian Poulter, decided to switch to LIV Golf, a decision McIlroy considers an irreparable betrayal. “For the first time in my life, I felt a sense of betrayal,” McIlroy admitted in an interview with The Guardian in 2022, lamenting the loss of bonds built over decades of competition.

Shipnuck’s book does not limit itself to describing these on-course rivalries, delving deeply into the champion’s personal issues. McIlroy’s relationship with Erica Stoll, his wife for several years, is one of the central focuses. Shipnuck even nicknames Stoll “neo-Elin”, referencing Tiger Woods’ ex-wife, Elin Nordegren, whose life was marked by scandals of infidelity and media distancing. Like Elin, Stoll reportedly avoided public exposure during the divorce process, staying out of the limelight despite marital turbulence.

The love story between McIlroy and Stoll began in 2012, during the Ryder Cup, when she was working for the PGA of America. At the time, McIlroy was still engaged to tennis player Caroline Wozniacki, but he quickly broke up with her to start a relationship with Stoll, which culminated in marriage and the birth of their daughter Poppy.

However, in 2024, explosive rumours emerged of a possible involvement between McIlroy and CBS journalist Amanda Balionis, after an interview that raised suspicions of flirtation. This news coincided with McIlroy’s divorce petition from Stoll, citing an “irreparably damaged” relationship. However, weeks later, McIlroy withdrew the petition, describing the episode as a “warning sign” to prioritise family and the values he believed were being neglected due to the pressures of professional golf.

Since then, McIlroy and Stoll’s relationship appears to have stabilised. Erica has been a constant presence at major tournaments, including the Masters and the 2025 Ryder Cup, supporting her husband in his quest for more glory. The family recently moved from Florida to a mansion in the UK, a decision influenced by Stoll. The couple has been discussing co-parenting and balancing professional demands with family life, with McIlroy acknowledging that his career on the DP World Tour and PGA Tour could limit time with their daughter.

At the 2026 Masters, Stoll did not hide her engagement ring valued at $650,000, symbolising a new chapter in their relationship. However, Westwood’s comments and the revelations from Shipnuck’s book reignite speculation and challenge McIlroy to stay focused on the competition, ignoring external noise that threatens to destabilise him.

Five-time major champion Rory McIlroy is thus at a pivotal moment in his career and personal life. The challenge is twofold: to make history on the green and to silence the narrative that labels him a “drama queen”. The 2026 Masters could be the stage to prove that, despite the controversies, talent and determination remain intact. It remains to be seen whether the world number one can overcome this turbulent phase and reaffirm himself as the golfing giant the world knows.
