“I really tried to understand football,” McIlroy told a group of reporters. “I made a genuine effort. I enjoyed the Super Bowl, especially for the defensive capabilities of both teams, and particularly the Seahawks.” The golfer, who considers himself more comfortable with cricket, admitted that while his upbringing did not expose him to football, he recognizes the effectiveness of NFL marketing. “The season is short, and when it ends, people miss it. From a marketing standpoint, that’s genius, right? They offer a continuous flow of news. It starts with the combine, then the draft, followed by the preseason. The season may be brief, but they manage to keep interest throughout the year,” he added.

McIlroy’s statements take on a new dimension when considering that he and other influential golfers have been advocating for a reduction in the length of the PGA Tour season, aiming to make tournaments even more significant. The Irish player, who won Pebble Beach last year for the first time, saw that victory catapult him to additional triumphs, including the Players Championship and the Masters. As a result, he currently holds the second position in the world rankings, trailing only Scottie Scheffler.
