Zach Johnson won the Portugal Invitational of the PGA Tour Champions by defeating Stewart Cink by two strokes, a remarkable achievement that marks his fourth victory of the season. With a strong start, Johnson stood out early in the day by making three consecutive birdies, putting pressure on Cink, Padraig Harrington, and Rory Sabbatini, who were tied for the lead before the final day of competition.
The event took place at the Els Club Vilamoura in Portugal, where Johnson finished the tournament with a total of 19 under par, while Cink, despite a solid performance that included two birdies in the last four holes and a final round of 68, ended at 17 under par. Harrington concluded the event with a 70, finishing in fourth place, while Sabbatini struggled and fell out of the top 10 with a round of 76.
Johnson's victory not only matches the number of wins between him and Cink this season, but also intensifies the friendly rivalry between the two. After the game, Cink expressed his motivation, stating, “I feel motivated by Zach Johnson.” This reflects the mutual respect they have for each other, especially considering they had played together in 2005 in a competition where they both had a disappointing performance.
One of the most memorable moments of Johnson's journey was an impressive birdie on the seventh hole, a par-4 that challenged many players throughout the week. With a 4-hybrid from 214 yards, Johnson left the ball just five feet from the hole, which he considered a crucial turning point in his round. “Making a birdie on the 7th was probably what really gave me the momentum, because I would say it's probably the hardest hole today,” Johnson said, emphasizing the significance of this achievement in his performance.
With this victory, Johnson may have tied Cink in wins, but he still trails in the season's money race. Cink acknowledged the need to maintain a high level of play until the end of the season, stating that he cannot “rest on his laurels” until the Charles Schwab Cup Championship, which will take place in November at the Phoenix Country Club. Johnson, for his part, continues to accumulate positive moments, and both players know that the competition is far from over.
