Belarusian tennis player Aryna Sabalenka is facing a storm of fierce criticism for her recent association with Russian rapper L’ONE, who is known for openly supporting his country’s invasion of Ukraine. Since the onset of the conflict in 2022, the tension between Belarus and Ukraine has reverberated in the tennis courts, with repercussions that extend far beyond the sport.

Ukrainian players have been boycotting competitions involving athletes from Russia and Belarus, avoiding any traditional interaction due to the active role these countries have played in the devastation of Ukraine. The impact has been so significant that the International Tennis Federation has excluded Russia and Belarus from competitions such as the Davis Cup and the Billie Jean King Cup.

When questioned about her country’s stance regarding the Russian aggression, Sabalenka adopted a pacifist position, expressing a desire for the war to end soon. However, her recent connection with figures who support Russian brutality raises serious doubts about her intentions. During an interview on the Bench podcast, part of First & Red, the tennis player met with L’ONE, whose real name is Levan Gorozia. The rapper, who admitted to financially supporting his country’s actions in Ukraine, stirred significant controversy with his statements.

The fans’ reactions were instant and forceful. On social media, many expressed their disappointment and outrage. “May she never win another Slam again,” wrote one fan. Another commented: “She has never been neutral… Posing with Lukashenko, celebrating with him.” The demand for Sabalenka to be banned from tennis echoed among many supporters, while others called her a “loser.”

The tennis player was also criticized by Oleksandra Oliynykova, a Ukrainian player who stood out during the Australian Open, where she did not hesitate to confront colleagues who supposedly support Russia. Oliynykova pointed out that Sabalenka had signed a list supporting Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko during the civil unrest in 2020, when the Belarusian government violently suppressed peaceful protests. “She declared that Lukashenko was her president,” emphasized Oliynykova in an interview with L’Équipe during the Australian Open.

Despite the controversies, Aryna Sabalenka has reiterated her desire for peace. Since her defeat in the Australian Open final to Elena Rybakina, the player has not competed, and responses regarding her recent controversial choices will have to wait until her return to the court at the upcoming Indian Wells Open. The situation surrounding Sabalenka continues to evolve, and the pressure on her to clarify her position is only expected to increase. The tennis community is watching closely, and public pressure could shape the future of the Belarusian’s career.
