Shock in the tennis world: [Carlos Alcaraz](https://apitofinal.pt/modalidades/tenis/roddick-elogia-sinner-e-alcaraz-talento-que-desafia-a-logica/), the Spanish prodigy and current number 2 in the ATP rankings, saw his dream of reclaiming the top spot in the world hierarchy dashed after a “serious” injury forced him to withdraw from the Barcelona tournament. His abrupt exit from the Barcelona Open 2026 not only interrupts his campaign in this prestigious event but also risks prolonging his absence from the world number one position, leaving Jannik Sinner comfortably in the top spot for a longer period.
Things started to look grim when Alcaraz, just 22 years old, missed the crucial practice session before his round of 16 clash against Czech player Tomas Machac. Spanish media reported that the young tennis player received treatment at the hotel, staying away from the courts at a time when any movement could be crucial for his recovery.
In his opening match against Otto Virtanen, alarming signs had already emerged: Alcaraz called for the physiotherapist to bandage his right wrist during a break. Nevertheless, he showed resilience, controlling the match and winning 6-4, 6-2. However, the pain seemed more profound than expected.
In the press conference following the confirmation of his withdrawal, Alcaraz got straight to the point: “After analyzing the results today, the injury turned out to be a bit more serious than we all thought. I need to listen to my body and do what is best for me, so I don’t compromise my future.”
A tough blow for the Spaniard, who had ambitious plans for the clay court season. After an early exit at the Miami Open, Alcaraz regained some momentum by reaching the final of the Monte Carlo Masters, where he lost to his direct rival, Jannik Sinner. The Italian, with three consecutive titles in Masters 1000, has solidified his position at the top of the world rankings, a spot that Alcaraz aimed to reclaim precisely at the Barcelona Open.
The forced absence from this event means that the Spaniard not only misses the opportunity to earn valuable points, but also sees the battle for the world number 1 position further away than ever. Sinner, for his part, will be able to maintain his lead for at least another week, rested and preparing for the upcoming challenges.
Interestingly, Alcaraz had joked before the tournament about Sinner’s absence, who opted to rest after an exhausting winning streak. “I won’t miss him this week. I know I have to win the tournament to regain the number 1. The battle between us is fantastic and serves as extra motivation,” said the Spaniard, focused on improving every day, regardless of immediate results.
With a tight schedule, Carlos Alcaraz’s next objective is the Madrid Open, followed by the Italian Masters and, of course, Roland Garros. His recovery will be crucial to maintain competitiveness and not let the crown of world tennis slip away definitively.
The stage is set: what seemed to be a season of affirmation for Alcaraz is now turning into a race against time to return with strength. Tennis fans and experts are eagerly awaiting his comeback, while Sinner enjoys, for now, the throne they both fought so hard to conquer.
