In an epic and exhausting duel, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina nearly succumbed in his opening match at the French Open, but showed fierce determination to avoid imminent defeat. The young Spanish tennis player faced a brutal physical battle, even coming within two points of losing against Damir Dzumhur in a match that lasted over four hours, ultimately finishing with a dramatic triumph in the fifth set (6-7, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3).

In a press conference, Davidovich Fokina revealed the ordeal he experienced on court, explaining that the extreme heat left him nearly breathless: “It was a huge challenge for me because I didn’t feel well physically. The heat was suffocating; there were moments when I could barely breathe, which forced me to partially change my style of play. I had the chance to close it out in four sets, but during that game, I thought: ‘Let’s see what happens.’ I held on, and in the end, I managed to win.”

The Spanish player did not hide the harshness of the situation and the luck he had to remain in the tournament: “It was a matter of luck, a bit of confidence in myself, knowing that now I have two days to recover. I accepted the conditions I was in, nothing more than that. I’m not going to brag about winning in five sets; I would obviously have preferred a more comfortable victory, but we have to accept everything that happens,” he confessed to reporters.

Davidovich Fokina also highlighted the brutal climate change he faced, coming from Hamburg, where temperatures hovered around 10 degrees Celsius, to Paris, where the thermometer rose to 32 degrees: “I didn’t have time to adapt to this temperature change. It is much hotter here and it’s difficult, especially against such a solid opponent who forces you to fight for every ball. My body was not in the best condition and I had to accept that the heat was extreme and that I was not in my best physical state.”

This hard-fought yet crucial victory highlights the indomitable spirit of Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who, even in the face of extreme physical adversities, did not give up and secured his place in the next round of the French Grand Slam. An example of resilience and determination that promises to make waves in the upcoming stages of the tournament.
