The night of February 11, 2026, at the Qatar Open will be remembered for the surprising victory of Anna Kalinskaya over Elina Svitolina, one of the tournament favorites. The Russian player, who had not previously beaten the Ukrainian in three prior encounters, triumphed in straight sets, with an impressive score of 6-4, 6-3, in a match that lasted just one hour and 19 minutes. However, what truly caught attention was Svitolina’s behavior after the match, which left many questioning the boundaries between sports and politics.
As she approached the net to greet the umpire, Svitolina completely ignored Kalinskaya, walking past her without any acknowledgment. The gesture sparked widespread discussion on social media, igniting a heated debate about her decision. This was the fourth meeting between the two players, and with this victory, Kalinskaya improved her head-to-head record, now standing at 1-3. However, for Svitolina, the absence of a handshake seemed to be not just a matter of rivalry, but a clear message.
Svitolina’s statements are not new. In May 2024, after a match against Kalinskaya at the Italian Open, the Ukrainian star had already explained her stance on not shaking hands with Russian and Belarusian players, an attitude that reflects the political tension resulting from the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In the press conference following her victory in Rome, she stated: “It is very sad and frustrating for me that people do not understand this. It is obvious not to shake hands when I have so many friends on the front lines fighting for Ukraine. Can you imagine seeing them watch me compete and seeing me shake hands as if nothing has happened?”
Svitolina continued, stating that often one cannot separate politics from sports: “They represent their country and I represent mine in the world. In that sense, my position must be clear.” Her behavior has been consistent, regardless of the opponent or the outcome. At the 2026 Australian Open, after a loss to Aryna Sabalenka, the Ukrainian also refrained from the usual handshake, a situation that the Belarusian treated with indifference, stating: “I’m not focusing on that, and they have been doing this for so long. So, no more. It’s their decision, and I respect that.”
What followed Kalinskaya’s victory was equally revealing. The Russian player, who is having a remarkable season described as a turning point in her career, expressed her happiness with the win. “I’m very happy with my level. She (Elina Svitolina) is a great player and one of the toughest for me. A lot of respect for her. I had a different mindset. I had to stick to my plan, and it worked today, which makes me super happy. It’s nice to have another match tomorrow in the Middle East,” said Kalinskaya, who now advances to the quarterfinals of the Qatar Open.
The numbers speak for themselves: Kalinskaya won 61 points compared to Svitolina’s 52 and was effective at crucial moments, converting 80% of her break opportunities (4 out of 5). Svitolina, on the other hand, converted only one of her two opportunities (50%), which was not enough to change the course of the match.
The atmosphere of the match, which extended until midnight, was also a factor that Kalinskaya appreciated, fearing that few fans would remain in the stands. “I was worried that there wouldn’t be many people. I’m surprised. Thank you for coming and staying. Especially the kids over there,” she added, thanking the supporters who remained until the end.
With this victory, Kalinskaya advances to the fourth WTA 1000 semifinal of her career, where she will face Karolina Muchova in a match that promises to be exciting. The Czech leads their head-to-head record 3-0, including a dramatic comeback in 2024.
What remains to be seen is whether Kalinskaya will be able to maintain this new momentum. The Qatar Open could very well be the stage that witnesses the beginning of a new era in her career.
