Polish tennis player Iga Swiatek, a six-time Grand Slam champion, is going through a difficult period on the circuit, and her recent performance at the Miami Open has raised serious concerns about her form. Her early elimination from this tournament triggered a wave of confusion and questions among fans and experts, as Swiatek has yet to reach a semifinal in 2026, except for the United Cup. Legendary coach Rick Macci, who has previously guided stars such as the Williams sisters and Andy Roddick, is trying to quell speculation, stating that Swiatek is facing a mental battle with herself but will emerge victorious from this struggle in the future.
This is not a new phenomenon for Swiatek. In 2025, her popularity and dominance began to be questioned as the gap between her and world number one Aryna Sabalenka widened. The Polish player, who once dominated the circuit, found herself losing precious points and dropping in the rankings. Although she won titles at Indian Wells, the Madrid Open, Rome, and Roland Garros in 2024, her performance in 2025 has been disappointing, with early exits placing her in eighth position in the world rankings, something unthinkable for an athlete of her caliber.
However, Swiatek experienced an incredible resurgence by winning Wimbledon in spectacular fashion, followed by a triumph at the Cincinnati Open, proving that her magic was still present. Unfortunately, this positive phase did not last. Her participation in the WTA Finals was equally frustrating, as she failed to advance through the rounds. Even her victory in the United Cup with the Polish team had its downsides, with Swiatek unable to defeat top 10 players like Coco Gauff and Belinda Bencic. Her dream of completing the Grand Slam at the Australian Open fell short, with an elimination in the quarter-finals, followed by further defeats at the Qatar Open and Indian Wells, culminating in disappointment in the first round of the Miami Open, where she was surprised by compatriot Magda Linette.
After this defeat, Swiatek did not hesitate to share her frustration, describing the situation as a “nightmare.” Macci, ever optimistic, expressed confidence in the young tennis player’s abilities. “Iga will be fine,” he wrote on X. “She is a proven champion. Nothing has changed, but it seems that at 30,000 feet, some things around her have changed, and as a result, she is competing mentally with herself. Never underestimate the Punisher, because at the end of the day, she will find her way.”
The Sunshine Swing may have left a bitter taste, but Swiatek’s next challenge will be the clay season, a surface where she has excelled in recent years and has become her domain. In 2023, she did not reach any finals on the clay circuit, which contrasts sharply with her previous performances. Her next appearance will be at the Stuttgart Open, from April 13 to 19, a tournament that will feature an impressive lineup, including 14 of the top 20 players in the world. Swiatek, who won this event in 2022 and 2023, is determined to claim more trophies and emerge from this difficult phase.
