In a surprising turn of events that left fans in shock, Jannik Sinner was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Qatar Open in Doha by Jakub Mensik. Expectations were high, with many believing that Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz would face off again in the final of this prestigious ATP 500 tournament. While Alcaraz, the top seed, advanced to the semi-finals after a fierce battle against Karen Khachanov, Sinner took to the court aware of the tough task ahead of him.

Jakub Mensik, the young Czech talent and last year’s Miami Open champion, was an unfamiliar opponent for Sinner, adding an extra layer of complexity to the matchup. In the early moments of the match, Sinner appeared to be in control, with four break points on Mensik’s serve. However, the Czech showed great resilience, saving all the chances and even creating his own break point opportunity, which could have given him a crucial advantage.

However, the match was decided in a tie-break. Mensik started strong, breaking Sinner’s serve early in the tiebreak. After nine points, the Czech was ahead 6-3, with three set points at his disposal. Remembering his loss in the first set against Jan Choinski, Mensik did not make the same mistakes this time. He converted his first set point, winning the tie-break 7-3 and securing the first set.

The second set brought a significant shift in dynamics. After saving a break point early on, Sinner, the world number two, took absolute control. He broke Mensik’s serve twice, with the Czech failing to win a single point in both games, closing the set 6-2 and appearing to be back in contention.

However, in the third set, the story took an unexpected turn. Sinner faced a break point right in the first game and, this time, could not avoid the break. Mensik, determined not to let the opportunity slip away, quickly built a 5-3 lead. With Sinner serving, the Czech pressed and created a match point, which he promptly converted, sealing the victory 7-6(3), 2-6, 6-3.

With this impressive victory, Jakub Mensik advances to the semifinals of the Qatar Open, where he will face Arthur Fils in a match that promises to be electrifying. Sinner’s defeat raises questions about his preparation and performance in decisive moments, while Mensik demonstrates that he is ready to be a force to be reckoned with on the circuit.
