João Fonseca, the young star of Brazilian tennis, did not hide his disappointment after a disappointing debut at the Argentina Open, where he was eliminated by Chilean Alejandro Tabilo in an intense battle. The result, which left him out of the tournament early on, was a cold shower for the 19-year-old athlete, who had hoped to defend the title he won last year in Buenos Aires. In an emotionally charged press conference, Fonseca reflected on his performance, revealing the pressure he felt throughout the match.

“I felt physically very well, I was at 100%, even though the final result was not what we expected. I leave a little exhausted and sad because I really wanted to win. But you can’t win every match,” said João, expressing his frustration. The defeat, according to him, was especially tough, but the young player showed determination to remain optimistic. “My mindset is to keep doing the right things and working hard; in the end, the results will come,” he concluded.

Pressure is a theme that Fonseca did not hide. “I felt a bit of pressure. I would be lying if I said otherwise. I was a bit tense from the start of the match. I tried to find intensity and motivation, as well as seek support from the stands, but it wasn’t enough today. I lacked conviction and confidence, and we will work hard on that,” he said, already looking to the future. With the next stop in his hometown, Rio de Janeiro, he believes that things can change. “Now we go to Rio, I’m sure things will be much better,” he said hopefully.

In addition to discussing his performance in the tournament, Fonseca also addressed the importance of the South American tour. “I think it’s a very important tour for South Americans. This is only my second year on the ATP Tour, and I’ve already heard many players talk about it. I’m still a bit at the beginning, I don’t know what the future will hold. At the moment, for me, everything is perfect on the tour. Every tournament I play is incredible,” he explained, highlighting the relevance of this phase of the calendar for his career.

Regarding his journey in tennis, Fonseca has not been swayed by the numbers. “I am currently ranked 24th in the world, but that doesn’t mean I will be number one. Everything takes time. From my side, all I can do is continue to work hard, strengthening my mindset, technique, and physicality. I have a great team that helps me grow as a player and as a person. Every tennis player has their own timeline and story, and that should be respected. I don’t like comparisons, but they will always exist. Sometimes, they influence me and create tension, but generally, I can handle it well,” he concluded.

João Fonseca is now facing a crucial moment in his career. The pressure of being a young promise in Brazilian tennis is immense, but his determination and desire to learn and grow are evident. With his eyes set on the future, he is ready to face new challenges and prove that the defeat at the Argentina Open does not define his potential. Rio de Janeiro is waiting for him, and so is the Brazilian crowd.
