The ATP 500 tournament in Acapulco kicked off in grand style, and the big surprise of the night was the elimination of the second seed, Alex de Minaur. The Australian, who recently lifted the trophy in Rotterdam, was defeated by Patrick Kypson, a name that until now was not well known on the circuit, but made history by winning with a score of 6-1, 6-7, 7-6.

Kypson, ranked 103rd in the ATP rankings, achieved the most significant victory of his career. This triumph also marks his return to winning ways in higher-level tournaments since Indian Wells in 2024. The match, characterized by thrilling twists, saw Kypson break De Minaur’s serve at a crucial moment when the Australian was serving to close the match at 5-4 in the third set. The battle lasted an impressive two hours and 39 minutes, culminating in an electrifying tiebreak.

Now, Kypson is set to face Brandon Nakashima in the next round of the tournament, after the American comfortably defeated Elias Ymer in a match that ended 6-3, 6-4.

In another match of the first round, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina began his campaign in Acapulco with a solid victory over Daniel Altmaier, finishing the encounter 7-5, 6-3, after one hour and 34 minutes of intense action.

Additionally, a significant change occurred in the tournament draw: Mattia Bellucci, who was originally set to face Sebastian Korda, will see his opponent change. Korda, after a victory at the Delray Beach tournament on Sunday, decided not to participate in the event in Mexico. As a result, Bellucci is now preparing to challenge Rinky Hijikata, who entered as a lucky loser. The winner of this duel will meet Davidovich in the round of 16.

Cameron Norrie also had an unhappy night, being decisively eliminated by Rafael Jodar, who gave no chances to the Brit, winning in straight sets.

In other matches, Miomir Kecmanovic secured a victory over Schoolkate, while Valentin Vacherot made an impressive comeback against Coleman Wong, triumphing with scores of 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Meanwhile, at the WTA 500 in Merida, Mexico, Katie Boulter had a victorious start by defeating Beatriz Haddad Maia, and Emiliana Arango also celebrated her victory by beating Anastasia Potapova. At the WTA 250 in Austin, Rebeka Masarova advanced by eliminating Xinyu Wang, and Taylor Townsend did the same against Linda Fruhvirtova.

The Acapulco tournament promises even more surprises and excitement, with players seeking glory and new opportunities to shine on the circuit. Stay tuned, as the action is just beginning!
