Roland Garros experienced a historic night for Italian tennis with the impressive victory of Matteo Arnaldi against Greek player Stefanos Tsitsipas, securing his qualification for the third round of the tournament. Following Matteo Berrettini’s triumph over Arthur Rinderknech on the legendary Philippe Chatrier court, it was Arnaldi who shone by defeating one of the biggest stars on the circuit, in a match that ended with a score of 7-6, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.

The young Italian tennis player, hailing from Liguria and currently coached by Fabio Colangelo, displayed remarkable maturity and resilience against Tsitsipas, who was also hampered by an abdominal issue during the match. The first set was an intense battle, decided only in the tie-break in favor of Arnaldi, who managed to maintain his focus even after losing the second set 5-7, where he had been in the lead but saw the Greek player come back at the crucial moment.

In the third set, Arnaldi capitalized on his opponent’s physical discomfort to build a comfortable lead, closing the set at 6-3. The fourth set confirmed the Italian’s superiority, as he broke the Greek’s serve again in the seventh game and secured victory with a decisive 6-2, in a match that promises to be a turning point in the career of the young Italian talent.

Now, Arnaldi is preparing to face Belgian Raphael Collignon, who caused a surprise by eliminating fifth seed Ben Shelton in three sets in a highly competitive section of the draw. This part of the tournament became even more open following the early exit of Jannik Sinner, who suffered a defeat against Juan Manuel Cerundolo and experienced discomfort during the third set.

In the women’s category, highlights include victories for Anastasia Potapova, who came back to defeat Katie Boulter 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, and for Victoria Mboko, who also overturned an initial deficit to win against Katerina Siniakova by the same score. Roland Garros continues to surprise with thrilling matches and unexpected results, keeping fans glued to their screens.
