Chaos has once again engulfed the Middle East following the recent joint airstrikes by the US and Israel on Iran, which took place on February 28. This aggression prompted a swift response from Tehran, which launched missiles and drones towards several nations, including the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan. Air defense sirens sounded, and authorities quickly reinforced security and adjusted regional airspace. At the center of this turmoil are names like Daniil Medvedev and Holger Rune, who found themselves stranded in Dubai due to flight suspensions amid a climate of tension caused by the missile threat.

Holger Rune, who recently recovered from a severe Achilles tendon injury during his semifinal at the 2025 Stockholm Open, traveled to Qatar with his team and family to expedite his recovery at the renowned Aspetar clinic. The 22-year-old shared a reassuring update on platform X, writing: “Doha today. We are all safe.” His mother, Aneke Rune, also commented on the tense situation, recounting the experiences during the recent attacks. Her statements were shared with the Danish outlet BT.

“It’s a bit wild. We had four missile attacks over us today. All were intercepted. Most of the sound resembled bombs or thunder… We could see the white streaks in the sky and the subsequent detonations, which turned into clouds in the blue sky,” Aneke said, expressing the mix of fear and relief that many were feeling. Despite the alarming scenario, she stated that they feel relatively safe and have a flight booked to Los Angeles the following day, although uncertainty about flights from Doha persists.

“We feel reasonably safe. We have a flight tomorrow to Los Angeles, but I don’t know if any planes are leaving Doha at any moment. We are packing as planned and we will see. We just have to go out to the balcony to get the latest news,” he added.

On the other hand, a representative for Daniil Medvedev confirmed that efforts are being made to ensure his departure from the region. The two-time winner of the Dubai Tennis Championships is also feeling the impact of the disruptions, which has created uncertainties regarding players’ movements. The situation becomes even more critical as the start of the Indian Wells Masters in California approaches, scheduled for next week, where Medvedev has already received a bye to the second round, but the travel disruptions could hinder his preparation for an event that requires sharp physical and mental condition.

The situation is not only affecting Medvedev and Rune. Other players in the region are also sharing updates during this crisis, monitoring the situation’s development while cautiously planning their departures.

Alexander Bublik, who had already finished his singles campaign at the Dubai Tennis Championships with a defeat in the round of 16 to Tallon Griekspoor, also commented on the tense travel situation. Through a post on his TG account, he described the uncertainty surrounding him. “We were flying from Dubai, thinking: ‘God willing, we will have a smooth flight.’ We had just exited Iranian airspace when I opened the news and saw this,” said Bublik, capturing the anxiety that many travelers were feeling.

In addition to Bublik, British player Finn Bass, who competes on the ATP Challenger Tour and the International Tennis Federation Tour, also faced travel issues. His journey to Dubai became chaotic, with a delay of over three hours before his flight was canceled. He expressed his frustration in an Instagram post, sharing a picture from inside the plane and writing: “Flight canceled, I’ve been stuck on the plane for 3.5 hours.” This message reflects the growing uncertainty affecting players in transit.

The Dubai Press Office issued an official statement on platform X, confirming widespread disruption in the city’s airport operations. “Dubai airports confirm that all flight operations at Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central – Al Maktoum International (DWC) are suspended until further notice.” The statement made clear the impact of the conflict on travel logistics.

Fans, concerned about the well-being of the athletes, express their hopes that the escalation will not have a direct impact on them. As tensions rise in the Middle East, uncertainty continues to loom over travel plans, leaving everyone on high alert and hoping for a peaceful resolution to this chaotic situation.
