A few days before the prestigious Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, set to begin on February 16, the tournament was rocked by devastating news: stars Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek, ranked number one and two in the WTA rankings, have withdrawn from the event. The tournament, which closely follows the Qatar Open, promised to bring together some of the best tennis players in the world in pursuit of glory, but now faces a significant challenge with the absence of these two great athletes.

Aryna Sabalenka, the current Brisbane champion and finalist at the Australian Open, expressed deep regret over her withdrawal. “I am really sad to have to withdraw from Dubai,” declared the Belarusian. “I have such a special connection with the tournament, the fans, and the city. Unfortunately, I don’t feel 100%. But I hope to be back next year and wish the tournament a great event.” Despite not having had success in past editions of the tournament in Dubai, her presence was always eagerly anticipated.

For her part, Polish player Iga Swiatek, who has already won six Grand Slam titles, also faced a challenging start to the year. After reaching the quarter-finals of the Australian Open, Swiatek suffered an unexpected defeat in the quarter-finals of the Qatar Open against Maria Sakakri, raising questions about her form. “I regret to announce that I will not be playing in Dubai this year due to a change in my schedule. I hope to return next year to experience this great tournament. See you in Indian Wells,” said Swiatek, making it clear that her priority now is to prepare for the upcoming challenges.

Despite the absence of the two main stars, the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships will still feature a strong list of competitors. Mirra Andreeva will attempt to defend her title, while other talents such as Elena Rybakina, Coco Gauff, Amanda Anisimova, and Jessica Pegula will be eager to seize the opportunity to shine, now that their most feared rivals will not be present.

The Dubai tournament, although marked by the absence of Sabalenka and Swiatek, still promises to be an electrifying competition, as the spotlight shifts to new stars seeking to carve out their place on the world tennis stage. What unfolds in the coming weeks, especially during the Sunshine Swing, which includes the tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami, will undoubtedly be a spectacle not to be missed for sports enthusiasts.
