“Serena Williams authorized to compete and stirs rumors of a return to the WTA.”

Serena Williams, a living legend of tennis, is officially back in contention on the WTA circuit after receiving the green light from the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) for her reintegration into the anti-doping program. The winner of 23 Grand Slam titles has completed the mandatory six-month testing pool period, thus removing the last bureaucratic obstacle to her triumphant return. At 44 years old, the champion can now enter WTA tournaments and Grand Slam events if she decides to take this bold step. Although Williams has not yet announced a specific date for her comeback, this confirmation marks a significant milestone that turns the dream of a return into a concrete possibility.

Rumors about her return have been fueled by months of speculation, driven by training videos shared on social media, showcasing the athlete focused on her serve and baseline work. While Williams had previously downplayed suggestions of a comeback, the recent formal announcement inevitably shifts the conversation. Her eligibility to compete transforms the idea of a return from mere speculation into a viable and competitive option.

As a former world number one and champion of 23 Grand Slam singles titles, the potential return of Serena Williams would not only elevate the competition but also have a significant commercial impact. This moment coincides with the famous Sunshine Double on the hard courts of North America, where high-profile events could serve as a natural stage for her possible re-entry.

Rick Macci, the coach who played a crucial role in Williams’ development, believes that the decision to complete the doping requirements signals a serious intention on the part of the athlete. At 71, Macci is clear in his assessment that this move is not merely symbolic or a temporary appearance. “She is training with many sparring partners – men,” he revealed to L’Equipe. “She has also played with Alycia Parks, a good friend of hers in South Florida. So, I have no doubt about that (her return). I always thought she would come back from time to time to make appearances alongside Venus in doubles.”

The American coach emphasized that Williams’ goal goes beyond mere nostalgic appearances alongside her sister. He described the current phase as structured and performance-oriented, rather than just a promotion. “But we’re not just talking about doubles here… she is going all in. If she didn’t think she could compete with the best and win, she wouldn’t be doing this. It is 100% certain that she will return to competition.”

For Macci, the decisive factor is Williams’ internal drive. He contextualizes the debate about her competitive instinct, arguing that her willingness to return to the testing program reflects a deeper motivation linked to performance. “The question is whether that competitive spirit is still there,” he added. “She is answering that question for herself: she is coming back because she is a competitor by nature.”

However, even with confidence in her willingness, Macci acknowledged that returning to the circuit presents distinct physical challenges. Competing on multiple days against high-level opponents is fundamentally different from isolated training sessions or matches. The modern WTA calendar demands recovery, consistency, and sustained intensity over several rounds.

According to Macci, the North American season could be the time for Williams’ return, possibly at the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells Tennis Garden or at the Miami Open, tournaments where the athlete has already built a strong history and is familiar with the conditions. He emphasized, however, that sustained performance remains the central issue. “It will be interesting to see how she is physically,” he added. “Making an appearance, playing an exhibition match or a game is one thing. Doing it again the next day and the day after, and performing well day after day is another.”

Anticipation is growing, and tennis fans are on edge, eagerly awaiting what could be one of the most exciting comebacks in the history of the sport.
