Taylor Fritz achieved one of the most dominant victories of his Grand Slam career by defeating Mattia Bellucci with an impressive score of 6-0, 6-1, 6-1 at the US Open. The American tennis player is now preparing to face Francisco Cerundolo, having praised his own performance after the match, where he excelled with the ease with which he handled his last encounter. “I thought I played really well today. I started to feel good from the beginning. Things were working for me. And I was very focused throughout the match. It was a very high level for me,” Fritz said at the press conference following the match.
Fritz had previously faced Bellucci in Stuttgart, acknowledging that, despite the differences in surface, his opponent’s performance was remarkable in that match. “Yes. I mean, I think he played really well when we faced each other before in Stuttgart. And I felt that for a set and almost the entire second set, he was playing incredibly.” He also explained how the playing conditions at the US Open favor his style, allowing him to make more returns in play and handle his opponent better. “These conditions, I think, I mean, I’m responding to his serve much more. I can get a lot more returns in play. The backhand isn’t coming as fast, so I can handle that with my cross-court forehand.”
Despite achieving one of his most significant victories, Fritz does not consider this to be one of the best matches of his career. “I don’t know if I would say it’s among the best matches I’ve ever played, but things were definitely working for me. I can’t really criticize. I would have to be very demanding to find something I did wrong because I felt that all the important parts of my game were functioning.”
The player also addressed the issue of match scheduling, stating that he does not believe the tournament would place him on a specific court just because of the timing of his matches. “I don’t think they would put me in a specific location just because they’re thinking about the potential timing of my matches. And yes, I mean, in retrospect, obviously, it seems like they could place another match. But it becomes dangerous if they do that.” Fritz emphasized the difficulty of moving players to a different court at the last minute, especially during a Grand Slam tournament, where each athlete prepares for a specific venue.
With his confidence high, the American tennis player feels well-prepared for the challenges ahead. “I feel great. I think it’s really important not to wear myself out in the early matches because I need to have the energy to potentially do that later in the week.” He acknowledged the importance of managing endurance throughout the tournament, especially when it comes to recovering after demanding matches. “At the end of the day, we have a day off. But anyone will tell you that one day is not enough to recover from a five-set match. It’s not.” The way Fritz has navigated these early matches gives him extra confidence as he progresses in the tournament.
