The dynamics of the tennis world are sometimes as intriguing as the matches themselves. Recently, former top player Andrea Petkovic, now a commentator, shared some humorous reflections and tips on what it means to date tennis players. During her participation in the 2026 BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Petkovic highlighted the challenges and peculiarities of being in a relationship with these elite athletes.
In a light-hearted and witty post, Petkovic recalled her early experiences in Indian Wells, including the quirks of sharing rooms with male players and fans, many of whom were described as “tennis groupies,” eager to catch a glimpse of their favorite stars. What could be a fun moment actually reveals a less glamorous side of the professional circuit.
“The egos of tennis players are fragile,” stated Petkovic, joking that, except for big names like Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, and Novak Djokovic, the self-esteem of athletes tends to depend on their results on the court. “All their values are tied to the results, and these are as volatile as Alexander Zverev in interviews,” he added humorously.
Petkovic advised those interested in tennis players to be creative in their approaches. “If you’re thinking, ‘Oh, better not to praise them, they get compliments all day,’ you’re mistaken. You should praise them, but in a creative way. Don’t tell Jakub Mensik that you admire his serve; say you like his headband. Don’t tell Grigor Dimitrov that he’s handsome; say he’s eloquent,” he shot.
Maintaining his distinctive and ironic style, Petkovic described tennis players as “monotonous,” focused solely on their training routine. “You will have to work… hard. Let’s be clear, tennis players are kind of boring… it’s not a criticism, it’s the reality. They like sports, training, eating, and sleeping,” he wrote.
The former player emphasized that to succeed in a relationship, it is necessary to bring personality to the table. “You need to be the person who asks questions, suggests movies, researches restaurants (unless you want to eat at the hotel restaurant every day), and makes jokes,” she stressed.
Meanwhile, at the tournament, Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Novak Djokovic started their campaigns in style. Alcaraz, the current world number one, faced the experienced Grigor Dimitrov, winning in straight sets with a convincing 6-3, 6-2. Sinner, for his part, had no difficulties, defeating Dalibor Svrcina with a crushing 6-1, 6-1. Djokovic, although facing a challenge, secured an exciting victory against Kamil Majchrzak, coming back from an early deficit to triumph 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
Petkovic, with her insightful and humorous observations, not only sheds light on the challenges of the tennis world but also offers an interesting perspective on life off the courts, where fragile egos and the quest for human connection intertwine.
