The frustration of Amanda Anisimova reached its peak after a heartbreaking defeat to Jessica Pegula in the semifinals of the WTA Dubai Open 2026. The outcome of this match not only solidified Pegula’s dominance in their head-to-head record, which now stands at five consecutive victories, but also left Anisimova feeling the weight of the pressure of failing to overcome her compatriot.

The clash took place on February 20, and it seemed like a golden opportunity for Anisimova, who entered the court determined to change her fortune. After dominating the first set with an impressive 6-1, the hope of finally defeating Pegula hung in the air. However, what appeared to be a clear path to victory quickly turned into a nightmare.

Just a few games away from securing the win in the second set, Anisimova led 4-3 and seemed ready to close out the contest. However, Pegula, with impressive tenacity, responded with a devastating run of three games, taking the set to 6-4. The young player could not recover in the decisive set, and the defeat was sealed with a final score of 1-6, 6-4, 6-3. Anisimova’s despair and disappointment were evident; her anger overflowed as she, visibly upset, slammed her racket against her backpack while leaving the court.

Despite the negative outcome, the week in Dubai was not entirely lost for Anisimova. After failing to defend her title at the Qatar Open due to an injury, which forced her to retire during the second set against Karolina Pliskova, she was preparing for a necessary break before returning to the circuit. Her next challenge will be at the Indian Wells Open 2026, one of the most prestigious tournaments on the WTA calendar, taking place from March 3 to 15 in California.

Anisimova, who made an impression by reaching the fourth round of the Indian Wells Open in 2018 as a 16-year-old teenager, is looking to reverse a losing streak that has plagued her in recent years. Since 2022, she has not won a match at this tournament, and her current form is an indicator that she is determined to break this negative sequence. After Indian Wells, she plans to head to the Miami Open, where she reached the round of 16 last year and is eager to improve on that performance.

Pressure on Anisimova mounts with each defeat, and her determination to recover from an unstable emotional state may be the key to her success in upcoming competitions. The tennis world will be watching, as the young American seeks not only victories but also the self-confidence needed to thrive in an increasingly competitive circuit.
