VIDEO – Daniil Medvedev explodes and breaks racket in humiliating defeat

Daniil Medvedev suffered one of the biggest humiliations of his career at the Monte Carlo Masters, losing 6-0, 6-0 to Italian Matteo Berrettini, in a display that left fans and experts stunned. The former world number one appeared to be on the road to recovery after consecutive finals in Dubai and Indian Wells, where he even defeated the powerful Carlos Alcaraz, but his performance on the Monegasque clay proved to be an absolute disaster.

In a match marked by disbelief and the Russian’s lack of emotional control, Medvedev failed to win a single game against Berrettini’s relentless serve. The Italian imposed a crushing pace, racing to an initial 2-0 lead, taking advantage of his opponent’s break point opportunities and consolidating his advantage to 6-0 in the first set. The second set continued to be a nightmare for Medvedev, who saw Berrettini lose only two points on his serve, closing out the match without conceding a single game.

The frustration of the Russian tennis player was visible and explosive. Known for moments of irritation on court, this time Medvedev took his loss of control to an extreme level: he broke his racket no less than six times during the match, slamming it against the ground and the wall, in a display of fury that did not go unnoticed by the spectators in Monte-Carlo. The sequence of racket destruction, carried out right in front of the umpire, became the highlight of the match – and not for sporting merit.

This result is particularly shocking as it marks the first time in the Russian’s career that he has been “double bageled” (losing 6-0, 6-0) and also the first time since 2018 that Medvedev has not progressed beyond the second round in Monte-Carlo. His hopes of recovering after an early exit at the Miami Open were thus completely shattered by Berrettini’s masterful performance and by the psychological breakdown of the former US Open champion.

Berrettini, for his part, moves forward in the tournament with a high-level display, maintaining a perfect record of 16 consecutive matches won in Monte-Carlo, a run that also includes the withdrawal of Roberto Bautista Agut the previous day. The Italian proved unstoppable, giving Medvedev no chances and confirming that he is in great form for the clay court season.

This crushing defeat raises a huge question mark over Daniil Medvedev’s current state, who seemed to be regaining his best tennis, but now faces a return to square one, with two consecutive losses shaking his confidence. The incident of the broken rackets will forever stand as a symbol of his frustration and the humiliation suffered in Monte Carlo, a stark warning of what could be a turbulent period in the Russian tennis player’s career.
