After the bitter defeat of FC Porto against Sporting in the first leg of the Taça de Portugal semi-finals, André Villas-Boas did not hold back in his criticism of several parties involved, in a strong statement that promises to shake up the world of Portuguese football. Upon leaving Alvalade, the president of the Dragons made it clear that dissatisfaction with the refereeing and the behavior of certain players cannot go unnoticed.
“I want to send a very clear message: I, in China, as a coach, received a four-match suspension for making a gesture similar to that of Suárez [of theft]. The president of Sporting has already called the president of the Federation, João Capela, and Nuno Almeida [both referees] thieves. Luis Suárez just clearly called the referee Cláudio Pereira a thief, for all the televisions, with gestures. I want to know if Suárez will also receive a four-match suspension or if the Portuguese championship can be compared to the Chinese championship. The example is clear; just as I was punished, I also expect the same – just as I expected the president of Sporting to have been punished in line with a Disciplinary Council that decided to shelve a very serious accusation regarding the refereeing bodies and the presidents of the Federation,” said Villas-Boas, revealing his indignation.
In addition to criticizing Suárez, the leader of FC Porto also addressed the controversial plays of the match, namely the foul that could have resulted in a second yellow card for Alberto Costa. “Possibly, it is grounds for a yellow card. The problem is that previously there was no reason for a yellow card and the referee gives one. That was the problem with a risky appointment by the Refereeing Council for a semi-final like this, with the importance of this one, and unfortunately, the referee did not rise to the occasion,” he lamented.
The instability of officiating in decisive matches is not a new issue, but Villas-Boas emphasizes that the situation “is regrettable.” He highlights that one team seems to continue escaping punishment, fostering an atmosphere of simulation and pressure on referees, a criticism that has intensified following the recent incident involving Fofana’s penalty against Arouca. “This type of officiating conditioning is clearly visible and was evident this week,” he concluded, making it clear that his team’s dissatisfaction is justified.
The president of FC Porto also referred to statements made by Rui Borges, the coach of Sporting, who insinuated a series of irregularities in the classic match at Dragão. “Those are the words of the Sporting coach, who somewhat confuses things. When he wants to see things, he sees things. When he doesn’t want to see things, he doesn’t see,” Villas-Boas shot back, arguing that the foul on his player Pepê before the incident that led to the penalty is a clear example of the injustices that marked the game.
With the tension rising between the two rival clubs and accusations flying from both sides, the controversy is far from over. Villas-Boas showed no signs of intimidation and has already announced that FC Porto will file a formal complaint against Luis Suárez, further intensifying the rivalry between the Dragons and the Lions. This development promises to not only stir up social media but also create waves in the sports sphere in Portugal, where emotions are running high.
