Ronald Araújo, the Barcelona defender, has decided to put an end to the controversy surrounding a hard tackle on Phil Foden, the Manchester City player, during a friendly match between England and Uruguay that ended in a 1-1 draw. The incident sparked a wave of reactions, particularly from England’s manager, Thomas Tuchel, who did not hesitate to confront Marcelo Bielsa, the Uruguayan national team coach, following the event.

The critical moment occurred when Araújo, in an attempt to clear the ball, struck Foden’s left ankle with a vigorous tackle, causing the Englishman to leave the field visibly uncomfortable. Despite the impact of the incident, Foden did not publicly criticize the Uruguayan defender, but the tension escalated on the English side, leading Tuchel to express his dissatisfaction.

In statements made to journalists, Araújo explained his version of the events and revealed that, after the match, he made a point of contacting Foden to clarify the situation. “It was a strong tackle, but obviously I went for the ball with no intention of hurting,” the defender stated, emphasizing that his intention was never to injure the opponent.

“After the game, I spoke with him, I sent him a message and he told me that everything was fine, that these things happen in football. Things can escalate, but it’s clear that I went for the ball and everyone knows that I have no malice,” Araújo added, expressing his desire to dispel any misunderstandings.

Araújo admitted that the tackle was tough, but reiterated that there was no malice involved. “I saw the play afterwards and it’s true that, if we stop it, it’s a very strong tackle. But my intention is to go for the ball, the referee and VAR were on the field, and it’s clear that I’m going for the ball. The important thing is that I spoke with Foden, he is fine and told me that nothing happened, that it’s football, and I’ll leave it at that,” concluded the Barça captain.

With these statements, Araújo is not only trying to clarify the situation but also reaffirming the essence of the sport, where tough tackles can occur, but sportsmanship and respect among players should prevail. The situation, although tense, seems to have been resolved peacefully, allowing both players to move on, focusing on what really matters: the game.
