Benfica faced a harsh reality last Wednesday, losing 0-1 to FC Porto and thus being eliminated from the Taça de Portugal. In statements to Sport TV, António Silva, the central defender who took on the captaincy of the team, analyzed the match with a mix of frustration and determination, stating that, despite the result, his team demonstrated a strong performance on the field.

“We came with the ambition to win and progress; I think we were the stronger team on the field, but we ended up conceding a goal from a set piece early on. But I believe we were a great team, we played in FC Porto’s midfield, created our opportunities, but unfortunately, we couldn’t advance. However, it’s a great demonstration from the team,” Silva said. The sadness over the defeat is undeniable, but the young defender did not fail to highlight the quality of Benfica’s play, which, according to him, was able to control the pace and dynamics of the match.

António Silva’s analysis did not stop there. He acknowledged that, despite the individual qualities of the players, the team still needs to improve in some aspects. “We are a team that, in terms of individual quality, is very strong. Perhaps we lack a bit of aggression in duels, being more pressing, but today we managed to do that throughout the game. Physically, we presented ourselves very well; there’s the regret of not progressing,” he stated. This self-criticism reveals a deep understanding of what is necessary to achieve success, especially in decisive confrontations like this one.

The central defender also expressed optimism about the team’s future, despite the elimination from the Cup. “We managed to create, to get the ball to the flanks, also with connections through the middle, we created many opportunities, we also lacked a bit of luck, it’s part of football. We have another game on Saturday, against Rio Ave,” he commented. This determination to continue fighting is a sign of Benfica’s resilience, which knows that the season is still far from over.

Finally, António Silva sent a clear message to the fans: “As long as it’s possible, we will fight and the fans will continue with us, as always. We are 10 points behind [in the league], but the past tells us that it is possible, mathematically it is possible, and we will chase it.” The belief in a comeback is evident, and the Eagles are ready to face the next challenge with the same grit and determination they showed on the field, even in defeat.

Although Benfica has exited the Taça de Portugal, they promise not to give up and remain focused on the goals that can still be achieved this season. The fight continues, and with the passion of their fans by their side, the Eagles intend to turn things around.
