FC Porto stumbles at home against Famalicão as Sporting closes in dangerously

In an electrifying and unpredictable match in the 28th round of the Primeira Liga, FC Porto dropped points at the Dragão, drawing 2-2 with Famalicão, a result that could prove costly in the title race. The Dragons, who twice held the lead, were unable to secure the result and allowed Sporting to narrow the gap in the standings, creating a scenario of immense pressure for the final matches.

FC Porto started strong and dominated much of the first half, with Alberto Costa opening the scoring in the 35th minute, a play that lifted the crowd. However, Famalicão did not let themselves be intimidated and equalized just after halftime through Sorriso in the 54th minute, demonstrating their resilience. Tension in the stadium grew, and in stoppage time, Fofana seemed to have secured the win for Porto by scoring in the 90+1 minute. The euphoria, however, was short-lived: in the 90+9 minute, Rodrigo Pinheiro equalized for the visitors, leaving the Dragão in silence and the fans in disbelief.

This draw marks the third consecutive home game in which FC Porto has failed to secure three points, despite remaining unbeaten for eight matches. The league leader now sees its advantage over Sporting reduced from seven to five points, with the two-time champions still able to narrow the gap further, as they have a game in hand against Tondela. Benfica, in third place, is eight points behind FC Porto but still has a tough match against Casa Pia scheduled for Monday.

For Famalicão, this point is worth its weight in gold. The team halted a run of three consecutive victories but maintains an impressive streak of six games without a loss in the Primeira Liga, consolidating fifth place with 46 points, just one point ahead of Gil Vicente.

With FC Porto now preparing to host Nottingham Forest in the quarter-finals of the Europa League, this home draw raises a red flag regarding the dragons’ ambitions. The title is far from guaranteed, and the upcoming matches promise to be decisive in determining the national champion.
