Frederico Varandas is preparing for a new chapter at the helm of Sporting Clube de Portugal, with his inauguration ceremony scheduled for this Wednesday at the Auditório Artur Agostinho, located in the iconic Estádio José Alvalade. The ceremony, which promises to attract the attention of fans and journalists, will begin at 6:00 PM, solidifying the physician’s position as the undisputed leader of the club for another four years.

Varandas was re-elected last Saturday, winning overwhelmingly in the elections with 89.47% of the votes, which translates to 67,106 votes from a total of 12,897 voters. This impressive result was achieved at the Pavilhão João Rocha, where members clearly demonstrated their preference, relegating businessman Bruno Sorreluz, better known as Bruno Sá, to a distant margin with only 4,710 votes (6.28%). The voting also recorded 3,115 blank votes and 74 null votes, highlighting the importance of democratic choice within the club.

Of the 75,817 members eligible to vote, only 18,268 participated, but the validation of 14,337 votes reflects a strong commitment from the membership base, which decided to support a single list for the club’s governing bodies: General Assembly (MAG), Board of Directors (CD), and Fiscal and Disciplinary Council (CFD). This uniformity in choice indicates confidence in the work carried out and a desire for continuity.

Frederico Varandas, who ascended to the presidency of Sporting in September 2018, had already demonstrated his leadership ability by securing 85.8% of the votes in the March 2022 elections. At that time, his success was also highlighted by the high number of voters, which reached 14,795, positioning him as a central figure in the club’s recent history. It is important to note that this time, the leadership of the General Assembly will be assumed by Pedro Almeida Cabral, replacing João Palma, which could bring new dynamics to the club’s management.

Since taking charge, Varandas has not only become the 44th president of Sporting but also the most successful in terms of national trophies, having won an impressive total of nine titles. This achievement surpasses the previous record held by António José Ribeiro Ferreira, who led from 1946 to 1953. Among the trophies won by Varandas are three League Cups (2018/19, 2020/21, and 2021/22), two Portuguese Cups (2018/19 and 2024/25), and one Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira (2021), in addition to three national championships.

As Frederico Varandas prepares for his new term, expectations are rising among fans regarding the future of Sporting. His leadership ability, coupled with a clear vision for the club, could be crucial in achieving new successes and further consolidating the legacy he has been building. Varandas’ presence in the presidency is a clear sign of stability and continuity, promising a bright future for the lions of Alvalade.
