The recent decision by the Disciplinary Board (CD) brought relief to the captain of Sporting, Morten Hjulmand, who was acquitted of the assault charges brought by FC Porto. The complaint, which sought a red card for the Danish player, was related to an incident with Tiago Galletto during the Portuguese Cup match against Aves SAD.
The CD officials determined that the assessment made on the field by the referees could not be re-evaluated by disciplinary bodies. This means that, for the CD, the complaint from FC Porto was unfounded and deemed ineffective. This conclusion was supported by crucial testimonies from the officiating team, led by André Narciso, who confirmed their position on the disputed incident.
Bruno Esteves, the video assistant referee, was clear about his analysis: “After reviewing the attached images again, I maintain the judgment made during the match, considering that the incident in question does not fall into any of the categories of incidents/decisions subject to review according to the VAR protocol.” With this firm statement, the CD’s decision was solidified, making it clear that the original interpretation by the referee on the field was upheld.
The acquittal of Hjulmand not only strengthens his position at Sporting but also raises questions about the effectiveness of disciplinary complaints made by clubs. The decision by the Disciplinary Committee can be seen as a warning to clubs about the need to adequately substantiate their complaints, thereby avoiding their dismissal without a more thorough analysis.
As the season heats up and competitions intensify, the stability and confidence of the Sporting team could be crucial for their success in the upcoming matches. Hjulmand’s acquittal is not only a personal triumph but also a victory for the continued cohesion within the squad, which seeks to face the challenges that lie ahead.
